I think the answer to your question is YES or because the other men proved they did not want to serve with him due to his terrible field skills. IE: getting the men lost all of the time.
PS-I thought Schwimmer did a fine job during 90% of his role, only toward the end when he would get lost did he portray a whimpish/nerd persona, IMHO At that point I knew him as Ross...

The Colonel understood the Captain's ability to train the men but also understood that Captain Sobel did not have "what it takes" to lead the men in actual combat.

Easy Company's hatred of Captain Sobel ran a lot deeper than was shown. For instance, in the book, there was a training exercise where a fake triage was set up to simulate helping wounded men, and a volunteer was needed. Sobel volunteered and was, deliberately, sedated, an icision made on his body, and then sewn back up again. He was furious when he came to but never discovered who the culprits were.
As I said before, surviving members of Easy Co. credit him with bringing them together inadvertently. Again..read the book if you can.
BTW, The premiere of Band Of Brothers is being re-broadcast again tonight at 9 PM, followed by the making of special.

What I really liked was the sound of those naval fired 2000lbs shells coming over the sky. They are so big they sound like jets.
I thought for DPL it sounded better than average, but can't wait for the DD DVD.

Excellent show!

I probably will not be able to experience 5.1 for another 5 years, due to where I live.

I guess I'll have to wait for the dvd release.
I also felt a little confused as to who everyone was in easy company. As of right now I could not tell you who is missing from easy company. That is, who missed their drop zone.
Question: Is one of the members of easy company Vinny from Doogie Howser?

Isn't he really Marilyn Manson

IMDb doesn't think it's the same guy, so it seems doubtful. He could have had a bit part, but I know he isn't a lead player.

Another great episode.
Part Three: Carentan
Written by E. Max Frye
Directed by Mikael Salomon
This series is turning out to be much better than I had anticipated.
Tonights episode was tough to watch. The past weeks tragic events have made it very difficult for me to put myself in a frame of mind to watch any television other than the news, but I decided it was time to try and go back to a normal routine.
Tonights episode was very exciting. Easy Company's assault on Carentan was very harrowing. Characters are beginning to flesh out even further. Damian Lewis as Lt. Winters especially is good as the commanding officer. You can see why Easy Company respects him so much, as was demonstrated by his ability to snap Pvt. Blithe out of his hysterical blindness simply by speaking to him softly in an encouraging matter. A very good scene.
I liked the way this episode focused on Pvt. Blithe. I think the filmakers conveyed the horrors of war very clearly through his eyes. His "transformation" from a frightened soldier to a confident brave one was believable, and ultimately sad, tragic, and of course, true.
The action scenes are amazingly well done for a television series. They are as good as any I have seen in feature films. Tonights episode was directed by Mikael Salomon, a famed cinematographer, and it showed.
Considering what happened in New York City and Washington D.C this past week, seeing how these heroes of Easy Compay fought for our freedom over 50 years ago, adds another layer to this series. We owe our lives and freedom to these people who put their lives on the lines for us, as so many others will very soon.
The fight for freedom rages on.

I just finished watching the 3rd episode and all I can say is WOW! It just keeps getting better. The DD 5.1 was outstanding during the capture of Caratan (sp?). I was ducking for cover half the time! :) It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a mini-series this much.

Another nice touch was the Edelweiss flower on the German soldiers lapel, signifying excellence.
According to the book the Germans were excellent soldiers for the most part, however their leaders were the one who kept making huge mistakes costing them their lives.
It's these lttle things that are making this series so memorable thus far.

What else can I say? Another great, solid Band of Brothers. Very enjoyable and very well done. I already cant wait for next week.
I also cant wait until the DVDs come out so I can enjoy them back to back. What a great mini-series this is.

Agreed, another great episode, the war scenes seem very realistic and make you really not want to get involved in any war, that's for sure. All through the show I couldn't help but think of our US Armed Forces and how they will be encountering this if and when we decide to deploy them in harm's way. I feel a great similarity to what I am watching on Band of Brothers and what the US is about to embark on. A terrible, terrible thing that must be done, where many good people lose their lives and their loved ones, ultimately undertaken to prevent evil in the world.
Someone commented on how good the German soliders were, and they are correct about their leadership making dumb decisions that cost Germany the war. However, remember that by 1944, those decisions were already made and Germany was on the course to defeat. Also, most of the elite German troops were not in Normandy at the time of the invasion if I recall correctly. Towards the end of tonight's episode you saw the first of a more elite brand of German soldier, but I believe that most of the German army elite were either dead or on the Russian front in June of 44.
The show should really intensify battle-wise as Easy Company pushes towards Berlin, given that the Germans really put up a fight with their last major offensives and defense of the fatherland...
Great show..

I am confused! I had HBO on ready to watch the third episode and right before time, there was a "disclaimer" stating that due to recent events, this show will not be shown and will continue on September, 23rd. So I turned to another channel.
Now, I flip over at ten till 12 and see that the third episode just finsihed.
So did anyone else watching HBO see this message? I guess I will have to catch it on another day. Weird.

They have been showing that message for a few days now. It refers to two other other shows though. Curb Your Enthusiasm and another that I can't think of right now. I believe these were season premiere episodes that were pushed back.

An excellent installment. This series is really starting to grow on me. Some observations and questions:
--During the assault on Carentan, the part where the audio emulated what the soldier who took the storefront explosion was hearing, with it's distortion and echo, was a nice touch I thought.
--I agree with Tino in showing the battle through Pvt. Blithe's eyes. A nice contrast to the usual stoic soldiers one sees in war films, where rookies are often just as assured as their commanding officers. One thing though: was his temporary blindess real or something he created to get himself out of combat? It looked like it could go either way.
--Was that Colin Hanks (Tom's son) as the other soldier in the scene where the Edelweiss flower was found on the German soldier?
--The tank running over the German soldier was a creative (if rather nasty) effect. :)
--Some nice little moments (the comforting of a severely injured soldier in Carentan, the motorcycle ride, the closeup of the Edlweiss flower towards the end) really enhanced the show, IMHO. It's small touches like these that help make it a standout effort.
--The final scene set in the laundry house was very effective in conveying the loss of lives in the war. That to me had a more lasting effect than seeing a bunch of bodies sprawled out on the battlefield.
--And could someone help me identify who one of the soldiers is? I cannot remember his name: he's the one who does all the voices and makes the wisecracks...I believe he's also the radio man. Can anybody give me some assistance on this?
Part Four, "Holland," looks even better! Can't wait!

The other show is The Mind of Married Men. Last week, I saw what appeared to be its premiere episode, along with the premiere of Curb Your Enthusiasm. In Curb, the episode concerned selling cars and Jason Alexander...is that an old one? Or did they accidentally show the premieres a week early?

Indeed, CRyan, you were too quick to change the channel. The disclaimer referred to the season premiere's of "The Mind of the Married Man" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm", not "Band of Brothers"...

Agree with all the comments. I have not enjoyed a mini-series this much before. This series is better than most feature films, and I can already feel myself wishing there were more than 13 (?) episodes (I know, I am greedy).
What is surprising to me is how all the battle scenes (so far) look and feel consistent even though different directors are used with the episodes.
I also like the washed out effect (i dont know if you have seen the pre-first episode making of but they talk about how it was done digitally...all scenes have that washed out look). neat. Alas, I dont have a 5.1 DBS receiver but this is shaping up to be a must have on DVD.

Acoording to the book, Hysterical Blindness is a legitimate condition. Sorta makes sense too.
In the book, Lt Winters states what happened:
"Never saw anything like it", Winters said, "He was that scared, he blacked out. Spooky. This kid just completely could not see, and all he needed was somebody to talk to him for a minute and calm him down."
Also that was Colin Hanks. Gee, I wonder how HE got on this show? :) He did well I thought too.
