Hey Folks-
Any of you annoyed when the studios ruin
great plot points in films when they release
them on DVD?
This happens a little too often:
First FOX destroyed PLANET OF THE APES:
not only did you have to hide the DVD jacket cover
from those who'd never seen it, but the main menu
gives it all away as well.
There are lots of examples.
Well, I had some friends over last weekend,
who had never seen Funny Girl.
I popped in the DVD, and what do you know?
In the montage that prompts the set up of
the main menu, they have the shot of Babs
with Spoiler:the pillow for the "beautiful brides" number.
I didn't even notice until Teri (one of my friends) asked,
Spoiler:"Is she pregnant in this film?"
I asked why, and she said she'd just seen
Barbra wearing a wedding dress,
clearlySpoiler:showing a full term pregancy.
I just told her she'd just have to wait and see.
But, a scene that made me laugh out loud when
I first saw it merely caused Teri to respond,"There it is!"
Sure, she thought it was funny, but knew what was
about to happen.
Thanks, Columbia!
Grrrr.

I absolutely agree.
This happens to me quite often because I see many movies for the first time on DVD.
This really has to stop. I'd really be interested what Peter and Martin think about this issue from a studio perspective. Is is really necessary to spoil the fun with the menu and/or cover? Especially the menus or the animations leading up to them are often the worst offenders. It's not like they need to show all the best scenes during the menu like many studios feel they should do in trailers. I have already bought the disc! Don't show me the best/most surprising/most shocking/most impressive scenes in the menu, please.
All menus should be like Fight Club etc. That menu doesn't tell you anything. Just the way it should be.

The menus of "Astronaut's wife" at least in R2, showed
Spoiler:astronauts getting attacked, which is certainly a spoiler since the suspense of the movie is supposed to come from the uncertainty of whether something has happened or not.
Edited to add more spoiler bars, since upon rereading it some of my text did spoil some context as well.

Not likely. I hate Barbra Streisand.
But I do agree with you that the packaging people often spoil the surprises for us, which seems to be in line with the current trend of marketing people ruining plot twists by fully showcasing them in the trailers and critics frequently giving away or suggesting same in their reviews (witness Kevin Thomas and Kenneth Turan in the LA Times - oy!)
Which brings me to what I no longer do: read reviews of critics who do this and watch trailers or making-of documentaries before I see the movie. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to avoid visual contact with the box the DVD comes in, either!

Actually I think the Fight Club menu reveals too much about the movie- it gives away the "I am Jack's..." joke for one thing. Why can't they just make the disc START THE MOVIE when you put it in, and only show the menu when you hit the MENU button???

Speaking of spoilers: there was the version of Dr. Strangelove with a picture on the case of Slim Pickens riding the bomb down.
