The role of the female may be to create the embryo, but not necessarily to carry it to term. Turtles, fish, birds, etc. have females that don't carry their little ones to term, but instead place them into something else, be it a hole, nest, etc. Maybe this alien was doing the same thing. As to how the episode worked for me, it didn't in may ways. I did like that Trip had to decompress and adjust to their atmosphere and made is seem "alien" for a little bit. But why would a culture with obviously advanced technology ask for some backwater culture's engineer to help with repair? That would be like me asking some native/primitive tribesman from our world to fix my car. While it was nice to see an almost original Klingon vessel, I must say I was already sick of them by the time the other series ended them. Instead of giving them a kick in the arm with something new and creative to do (like trying to actually conquer people not just talk about how they could do such a thing if they got angry enough), it is the same old "honor and death" crap that got creaky in so many "a very special Worf" episodes on DS9 and Next Gen. Yeah, and then there is the introduction of cloaking and holodecks. It will be Next Gen all over again by mid season. Sheesh.
There was the funny T'Pol line that I liked, though, about the alien first showing Trip her hologram alien homeworld, only to follow it with him meeting her hologram family. Witty and said nice and dry. More of that would be nice.
I think this show is written by junior high english classes right now. Hopefully real writers will take over soon.
Ciao,
Phil
