DVD player "blew", but 5.1 speakers are fine. What do I need to buy to use the speakers? (1 Viewer)

I have a DVD Player/5.1 theater system. Nothing special, but it's worked great for me for years. Since I moved apartments the DVD player no longer works- it blows the fuse every time you try to turn it on. The speakers still seem great, though. They all (including the subwoofer) have custom plugs, but appear to just be normal speaker wire afterwards (i.e. I can just cut the plugs off).

What do I need to buy to get this going again? My research tells me that I need some kind of receiver/amplifier. I was using the DVD Player's optical in, so I need something with that (or HDMI passthrough) and 5.1 speaker cable outputs. Does such a thing exist? What's my cheapest option here? As I said, the speakers certainly aren't anything special, but they work great for me and I'd like to avoid spending a ton to get them working again.

IF those speakers are 3ohm, chuck them in the trash as well...and totally start over.

Because no cheap AVR is going to survive 3ohm. I can't think of a single AVR(outside Onkyo...and that is because of "how cheap from MSRP" you can get one) under $500 I would attempt to use.

Any speaker you can buy will also sound 100 times better than those. You can buy these and be better off...

And, since the stuff I linked isn't "craptastic all-in-one"...you won't be faced in the future with "throw it all in the trash and start over".

Cause I haven't even brought up attempting to use that passive subwoofer...you need an amp for that as well...here you go...

Anything more powerful than that one will blow that subwoofer to smithereens. And yeah...the "but it was 1000 watts". Meaningless marketing crap. I doubt this (whatever this system was) created more than 15 watts per channel.

Welcome to the forum Alastair.

Owners have raved about the Martin Logan MLT-2 (and its predecessor the MLT-1) speaker package, its only $300. Youd still need an AVR, maybe what Casey recommended.
