Hey Dan,

With regards to permits, I think it depends on what your local municipaility / district / county whatever requires you to have. Check with your local city hall to find out. They might even have a website which tells you what you need. You can also contact your insurance company and they will tell you what they require to make sure your insurance stays valid.

I know in my case, I had to have all of my electrical work inspected to make sure my insurance stayed valid.
