I've looked about, searched about and read about a LOT of TV's lately
and here's my situation.

Out in the sticks, no cable hookup or Satelite dish, just not there yet to
afford that each month right now.

So I have an antenna on the roof, you guys/gals remember those? :)
at least I do have a rotor which helps to bring in either of the two
channels in a little clearer...

My demise is this, I had been yearning for a wide screen system
current system is a quite old Sony 27" crt, and looking at the Samsung
40" LCD, but I'm hearing that with my current setup, the regular TV
channels will look crappier than they already do on the 27", it will
be nice for the dvd's but the bulk of viewing would be regular TV.

So, I'm thinking maybe go with a Sony 34" crt as that would look at
least as good, probably better with the newer techology now, than my
old 27" and it would still be about as high as the 27" screen is now.

Is that sound thinking, considering the not so good signal from my antenna?

Thanks in advance,
G2

Do the two stations you can get broadcast digitally? If so, then you'd be fine with a larger TV as long as you've got (or the TV has) a digital tuner.

I've found that regular SD channels look better on an HD set, for equivalent screen sizes. A 36" HD TV will look better than a 36" analog set with SD broadcasts. Buying a new, larger TV will look better for both normal TV and movies.

The question is size and aspect ratio. What's more important: DVDs or TV? If DVD, then buy a widescreen set. If TV, and you're only watching two, analog stations for the forseeable future, consider a 4:3 TV.

I don't think they do broadcast digitally, it's really in the boonies here.

I think I'll go with the 34" I don't seem to find a 36" but will look today when
I head up to BestBuy and check out what they are offering in the store.
Thanks guys,

Well today, they didn't have the 34" on hand, and even said that they probably wouldn't have it, so I looked at the Samsung TXS3082 30" Wide Slimfit HDTV, amazing looking picture, I think I'll end up getting this one!
I don't require a huge tv, just want something in 16-9 for movies and
is also HDTV too, price is right, now just have to get a stand!

Here's a quick shot of the new stand with the Samsung resting on top

Speakers are Klipsch RF7 for the mains and an RC7 that BARELY fit beneath
the Samsung,

Well knock me down and paint me silly, I was wondering why in order to view
the 16x9 movies I had to zoom in a little, even then along the bottom the
movie was arched a little more than I liked. Well I figured out that I had forgotten
the setting from within the DVD player, it was set to 4x3 due to the previous
tv setup I had, NOW things look ever so much better!
playing Lord of the Rings tonight, like watching it for the first time ;)

Thanks Steve, right now we have those few channels through the air
transmissions, looking at getting cable soon or possibly dish, but in the
mean time will get along fine with these few channels and all the movies
I have in my collection.

With the smaller screen, I doubt that I'd see a huge difference with the
blue-ray disks verses SD type dvd's, if I had a larger screeen, I'm sure
it would be quite appearent then!
