I'm in the market of buying a DVD player but I was wondering if it matters if I get a DVD player that has a built in DD/DTS encoder when my receiver already has one. Will the receiver override the encoder on the DVD or how does that work? Since my receiver already has a DD/DTS encoder would it be best if I get a DVD player that doesn't have a DD/DTS encoder in order to get the best sound or does it not matter? Thanks.

First, let's straighten out the terminology. It's the DVDs that are "encoded", not the player or the receiver. Your equipment has decoding circuitry.

It doesn't matter. Choose the player based on other features that are important to you.

BTW, if you haven't already done so, I recommend spending some time with the HTF Beginner's Primer and FAQ (link in my signature).

I think he means if the DVD player has to be able to play DD/DTS. I thought the DVD player has to be able to play these tracks. Make sure you buy a DVD player that has DD and DTS symbols on it. I would imagine that most new DVD players have this. You can usually find ones on sale for around 50-60 bucks.

No, he talking about players with built-in decoders.

All
DVD players can pass a DD signal. It's part of the DVD spec. And any player manufactured after 1998 should be able to pass a DTS signal. That became a standard feature once DTS finalized their specs for inclusion of DTS tracks.

Thanks for clearing the air on that one Michael. That made my purchase of a DVD player more comfortable. :)
