It looks exceptional! Can't wait to get this!

Look at this shot for example:
The colors are much better and natural.
The Japan Bluray is so much Brighter. I Have to see it in person. I just got a Sony 4K 85" X95J from Best Buy 2 weeks ago. My Blu & 4K's look Amazing ! :D I have a Digital version of Summertime on Amazon Prime. Here is a photo of the Digital version I have.

Every one of those screenshots cry out for a 1.66 aperture plate. :)
I don't know Why ? Criterion just didn't release a Full and Widescreen version of this movie. Waterfront got 3 different screen versions ! It was Best Picture 1954 and won 8 Awards total must be the reason. It's a Great movie classic for sure. I guess Summertime just isn't as popular. :(

Agree sir but they stuck to their guns that it is the proper ratio they can be stubborn thats for sure but they are a nice bunch - just wish we can get more classics from the 30's and 40's loved their Red River. Temple Blake etc

Whenever I've seen Waterfront as far as I can remember it's only been in 1.37:1. I can't imagine it any other way.

If you use your zoom feature on your monitor you can approximate a wide screen image from the open matte image.

We must also accept the reality that many 1:37 transfers presented as "open matte" have been pre-trimmed on the sides for safety, which means that what you're starting with is not even the true, full open matte. Generally speaking, when you zoom on these, filling your screen at 1.77, you'll never get as much picture area for correct composition as you'll get from a properly-prepared widescreen release, which is often 1.85 or 1.66.
