You would still need some sort of mike to pick up the signals in the room to be able to measure them in addition to the software. Why not just borrow your Dad's SPL meter?

I just got my SPL meter at radioshack a few days ago. It was on sale for $30.

Check out hotfiles.com. Do a search for "sound level" or "sound meter" and you will find some freeware and demo apps. One I tried, by SoundForge, DXVUMeter, worked ok with my laptop and a microphone, but I found that the mike I had was too directionally sensitive, and I ended up buying a RadioShack analog SPL ($30).
