As far as I know Species R1 is in its oar. It was an early release with oar on one side pan/scan on the other. DVD Empire lists the dvd as containing the movie in 2.35 which is what I assume it was presented as theatrically.

I just remembered another one:
Galaxina
Rhino went to all the trouble to release this cult movie, but only in a butchered P&S atrocity.

John, someone requested that we add certain info to each title on the watchdog list, so I am requesting that anyone in the know provide the following infomation for titles on the list.

Title (Studio) (Original Aspect Ratio) (P&S or Open Matte)

Here's a few that I can provide.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (MGM-UA) (2.20 : 1) (PS)

George of the Jungle (Walt Disney) (1.85 : 1) (PS)

Matilda (Columbia Tristar) (2.35 : 1) (PS)

Forever Young (WB) (1.85 : 1) (OM?)

The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking (Columbia Pictures)(1.85 : 1) (PS)

The Sword in the Stone (Walt Disney) (1.75 : 1) (PS)

That's all for now. I am sure I'll think of some more later.

I don't know if you have this one yet, but Saturn 3 probably belongs on this list. The SciFi schlock film with the robot, Kirk Douglas, and Farrah Fawcett's nipple? Yeah, THAT one. The only DVD I've seen of it at Best Buy is 4x3.

All four of these are open matte (even Matilda...it's Super-35).

I'm sorry, the only one that is listed as Super 35 is Matilda. The others are listed as sperical, and besides just because something is Super35, does not guarantee that the DVD is open Matte.

Probably, the only way to get Matilda in widescreen is if Columbia-Tristar released it as a Superbit title.

When a Stranger Calls Back isn't in widescreen, and at the beginning there's the stupid "this film has been modified to fit your screen" logo. So I'm sure it was meant for widescreen.

I'd call the undermatted ST 6 wrong OAR, but since it is Super-35, it's possible that the director or cinematographer asked for it to be undermatted.
It's still wrong, no matter who made the decision to open-matte it for video.
Watching TREK 6 on DVD, in its nealy 1.85:1 AR, it is clear to me that this is not the true form of this movie.
Try matting it to 2.35...a little matting on top and more at the bottom, you'll see it's true scope 2.35 AR.
Decisions to alter films for video are strickly for the commercial mass market...there's normally no art involved in that, just artistic salvaging.

I've updated the list to reflect the new titles. The update for studio, format, and OAR is going to take a bit of research though. I'll be working on that. If anyone has any information on these titles that is more definitive than IMDB, send it along to me.

Super-35's proper widescreen "area" is shifted a little upwards, so if it's matted to 1.85:1, you just need to matte on the bottom with a "black bar" about the size of one of the 1.85:1 black bars. (The bottom void will be thicker than the top.)

No, Patrick.

You need to slightly matte off the top as well, just a little bit.

Here are some more additons

These are from my personal collection:

Apocalypse Now (Both the Original and the Redux)

Cropped from 2.35 to 2.00.

Balto

From 1.85 to 1.33 (Open-Matte)

These are movies I have rented in the past through Netflix that have been cropped to 1.33:

Across the Line

Action Jackson

Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland

Airport (Cropped from 2.20)

All Dogs Christmas Carol

Barney's Great Adventure

Beethoven

Billy Jack

Bodyguard

Boiling Point

Burglar

Cannonball Run 2

Chappaqua

Dead Bang

Death Race 2000

Delta Force

Don't Do It

Fall Time

Farewell, My Lovely

Funny Farm

Get Over It (Cropped from 2.35)

Gray's Anatomy

Guilty by Suspicion

Half a Loaf of Kung-fu

House of the Spirits (Cropped from 2.35)

In Country

Killer Meteors, The

King Ralph

Lean on Me

Made in America

Michael

Nothing But Trouble

Pebble and the Penguin

Police Academy

Showdown in Little Tokyo

Stand and Deliver

Time Cop

White Palace

Wrongfully Accused

Also, I am pretty sure that the Air Bud sequels (Golden Receiver and World Pup) were straight-to-video releases. So they are in their OAR of 1.33.

When I went to pick up some of the new William Castle titles today, I was bummed to see that "Homicidal" is the only one of the three presented full-frame. I'll wait for reviews of the title before picking it up.

Homicidal should be 1.33:1 (All the other Castle films are properly matted to 1.78:1 or 1.85:1)

Balto isn't cropped. Universal said that they exposed the entire frame from an open matte print.

Apocolaypse Now's (sic) 2:1 ratio is a request by the cinematographer, so it's not OAR, but it's not non-OAR either.
