The original thread, started by John Berggren was a feature on my site, Widescreen Advocate, now at it's new URL,
Thanks to Scott Weinberg, and Ryan FB for their help in this effort!
For the Re-Opening of the site, I would like to take the time to update this list. Since John no longer has the time to do this, he has given me permission to start a new thread. This is based on a conversation we had several months ago, so if his posistion on this has changed, he may contact me.
That said, here is the list I have so far, based on John's thread. I know there are a ton of new additions with all the recent releases. I request that any new additions be accompanied by the following information. If you know this additional information for any of the titles already on the list, please feel free to add that as well.
Title (Studio) (Original Aspect Ratio) (Pan & Scan or Open Matte, Other) (Percent of image lost) (Is OAR available on other format?)

    Items to note:
    - Recent additions have been marked with a *.
    - Items that have been recently removed are crossed out.
    - Films that are shown without mattes are listed as (OM).
    - Stanley Kubrick films are not listed. I [John Berggren] am one who wants them in their original theatrical aspect ratio, but this is a controversial subject even here based on his apparent preference. If you think I should include them, let me know.
    - Disney titles framed at 1.66 are not included. The reason is that the animators painted the cells in this ratio, but the films were matted in the theaters.
    - 1.37:1 films framed at 1.33:1 are not listed.
    - 1.66:1 films framed at 1.78:1 are not listed.
    - If there is a current Studio and Manufacturer feedback thread, or petition about a film listed here, or you make one, I will modify the title to link to that thread or petition
    - If you've already posted a film for listing and remember another, create a new post. I can only guarantee that I'll read any given post once.
    - Let me know what I've missed and I'll add it.

Question: Why is GET OVER IT not in its OAR? Is it in a different widescreen aspect ratio?

Get Over It is in the right ratio as far as I know. It was filmed in Super 35 and shown in 2.35, and the DVD is presented that way. I wouldn't have bought it (and watched it 500 times) if it wasn't!

Sword in the Stone isn't Pan & Scan as far as I know. It'd be really strange for that to be Pan & Scan and not 101 Dalmatians, Jungle Book, Robin Hood, etc.

I'm researching that one. The last time I researched this, I came to the conclusion that it was indeed Pan & Scan, but I am always looking for further information.

How about submitting a list of all the Disney P&S titles that are on your site whenever you get the time?

also some of the "Ernest..." movies. But I'm not sure which if these are all theatrical movies or not.
Sorry, I didn't add the Studio, OAR, etc. I think Natty Gann is 2.35:1, which makes it especially bad to be P&S.

List has been updated. Keep them coming. And if you have additional info on a title please post it. It takes a long time to find this info, and if several people could help with titles they are familliar with, I would be able to finish this list fairly quickly.

Joshua, thank you for taking this on. This task is surprisingly (and unfortunately) cumbersome when you come right down to it.

Sword in the Stone may not be non-OAR. It's year of release (1963) would seem to indicate that Disney was still composing for 1.33, though most theaters were equipped for and showing widescreen. Subsequent theatrical releases have been at 1.85.

To nip it in the bud before it comes up: Disney films at 1.66 ARE OAR. They are animated for the AR, and shown outside of the US at 1.66. Theaters in the US show these films at 1.85 as they are either ill equipped to show films at 1.66 or disinclined to do so. The 1.85 ratio is matted from the proper 1.66.

Good luck. I wish the list were getting smaller.

Melies The Magician is presented in the original 1.33:1 format.

The two Air Bud movies, I think, were direct to video. The All Dogs Christmas Carol is a direct-to-video film as well. Both are OAR (unless the AB movies were released to theaters)

Anatomy of a Murder is presented OPEN MATTE, which is fine for this film. 1.33:1 to 1.85:1 is fine for the film. I know most think it's P&S, but many 1953-1959 films have unusual cases like this.

Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves is a direct-to-video production. It's OAR.

Which Three Musketeers is in this list? Disney's DVD is non-anamorphic, but OAR.

The Witches is 1.85:1. There is no credit for Panavision (or other anamorphic) lenses, so it's open matte. Still non-OAR, but worth mentioning.

The Fox and The Hound is open matte on DVD. It's not P&S, but rather done without mattes. This is the same for most of Disney's 1960-1980's non-widescreen process films.

The Great Santini could be argued about OAR, but it was produced for TV then released to theaters after it becoming a hit. Besides that issue, the current DVD looks hideous.

    The List has been updated.

Melies the Magician is not on the list, so I can't remove it. does not have information for which Ernest movies are presented in their OAR and which are not, so if you have that information, please let me know.

Let me re-iterate that Open Matte films are NOT presented in their OAR, and will be presented on the list.

Movies that are slightly misframed will not be added to the list, as there is no way to know for sure that the framing is incorrect. (Won't be adding BTTF)

Please check the list closely before you post, as I have already had several additions/corrections that were already on the list/corrected.

River Of No Return is apparently 2.35:1 when it should be 2.55:1. TCM show it uncroppped at 2.55.
Mister Roberts is definately cropped from 2.55:1 to around 2.35:1.
Marlon Brando's, One Eyed Jacks was shot in VistaVision and is available on, I think four DVD editions and guess what? - They're all 1.33:1. [IMG]
John Ford's, The Searchers was also shot in Vista and the DVD edition has a "widescreen" version and a 1.33:1 version. The "widescreen" version is basically a cropped version the already cropped 1.33:1 version! [IMG]
And finally, with the utmost respect to Vittorio Storaro, I have to say that no home-video edition of Apocalypse Now has been in it's original 2.40:1 Technovision ratio. Granted, he 'recomposed' the film himself for video at the 2:1 "UNIVISIUM" ratio but I would like to see a future DVD edition in 2.40:1. Sorry if this opens a hornet's nest of disagreements, but this thread is about non-OAR, and Apocalypse Now is simply not OAR.

Anyone have any idea about Young Frankenstein?
The conclusion I draw from this and this is that the intended OAR was 1.37:1 open matte...but the DVD version is 1.85:1 letterboxed (I can confirm this, I have the SE DVD). Anyone certain about what the OAR on this film was supposed to be?

Let me re-iterate once more. This list is for films that are presented in full screen, that should be shown in widescreen. This includes Pan & Scan, and Open Matte. Misframed DVD's will not be included on the list.

That's not to say that the misframed DVD's are correct, and that they shouldn't be corrected. They should, and there are a few DVD's that I really wish would be corrected. But the purpose of this list is to get people to rally for the films that have no widescreen release.
