Add Space Jam and do not add those Disney ones, which are in the proper ratio.
Any titles undermatted to 1.66:1 instead of 1.85:1 are not bad as you may think. Instead of the urban legend that all 1.85:1 titles are filmed hard-matted, these films simply have the mattes opened up a little. With Disney titles, I think it's actually a good idea to show as much of the animation as possible since 1.85:1 was manditory. Few theaters actually project films at 1.66:1 these days.
Actually, I agree with you. My only surprise is that the hardliners continue to remain silent on these.
I'm not a hardliner, and I can understand what Kubrick was getting at, though I think his films should be offered both ways.
As far as the Warner stuff (Batman Beyond, Justice League, etc), I don't understand what all the fuss is about. The extra areas were animated to be seen, and some of the shots look like the animators were disregarding orders and composing for the 4:3 with the matted version being composed as a good compromise. Yet a few of the shots do seem the other way. But again, all you have to do is put mattes up if you want the other ratio; something you can't do in many/most live action unmatted films (because there are usually some crop shots).
Frankly, the best thing for John to do is put all the stuff up (Kubrick, Disney, etc) and have footnotes. Some of these matters are subject to opinion, so better to annotate and not leave anything out.
The Great Santini is OAR all the way. It's a made for TV film.
The Great Santini was a theaterical film and the OAR is 1.85:1. I have the laserdisc and it is letterboxed.
Universal's new DVD release of the animated BALTO is in fullframe instead of OAR.
Balto was presented in 1.85:1 for theatrical release and Universal's laserdisc was letterboxed.
