I am -very- happy with my Canon S40. I don't normally make prints, but if I do, having the large 4megapixel images is nice. I like the rechargable battery, I purchased to more on ebay so I don't have to worry about running out of juice after a busy day (which hasn't happened yet).

I've got a Kodak DC4800, and it works really well. The picture quality is good, and it has tons of nice features. The battery is pretty good, especially if you buy the quick charger which will charge up the battery in ONLY ONE HOUR! It also has some power saving features that help to extend the battery life. I would also suggest buying a higher capacity CompactFlash card for it, as the included 16 MB CF card is really small if you plan on using JPEG at the highest quality (16 pictures would fit on that card).

I started a couple of years ago with one of the small Panasonic which we quickly outrun with our need, upgraded to one of the small compact Canons. Then I ran across a Fuji 3800. It is a keeper and does all we want. Easy too.....
