What's strange is the anamorphic menu screen, but a non-anamophic movie. If the movie isn't going to be anamorphic, why get my hopes up on the menu?!?

That was very common for the early DVDs released by Fox (and a few others). They used transfers previously done for LD (hence, non-anamorphic), but the menus were newly created.
BTW, this probably belongs in Software.
