Yeah, I see them mostly marked that way. I don't know where they're coming from as previously viewed, though, as there are not many video rental stores out there. Who is "previously viewing" these discs?
My Walgreens (Drugstore) has a bin of them from different Studios as well. They may be discs from packages that were returned (to DMC eg) and can't be sold as new.

Redbox is still around AFIAK.

$20.00 is about what those WB sets sold for at Costco around Channukah time a few years ago sometimes with an instant coupon.

Over the years I wondered where all those customer returned dvds went to from places like wallymart. This would make sense if wallymart didn't put back the opened/returned dvds back onto the shelves.

What would be the average time period a particular title is kept available in the redbox machines? The last time I checked redbox, movies older than two years or so seemed to disappear.

Where do all those "removed movie" dvd discs go to? (ie. Besides the garbage dump landfills).

Somebody that worked for Blockbuster said they kept stacks of the oem covers and when they sold the "previously enjoyed" ones they would add them to their cases --using a generic BB cover with the title printed if they didn't have the cover.

Stopped into my recently re-opened Big Lots yesterday. It re-opened last week after being wiped out by the flood back in July 2023, so it's like a new store opening. I wasn't sure if they'd have any discs, but they do still have a media rack with a small (so far) selection.

There were a variety of discs, from TV seasons on DVD, to a few 4K's and 3D's, regular DVD's, and some Steelbooks. I didn't buy too much, as I already had most of what I would be interested in, but I got an animated 3D of The Lion of Judah, and a 4K of Hickok. I also recall a steelbook blu-ray of Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 3. Prices seem to be a bit higher than before.

A new store opened in a town ~15 minutes away (part of our MSA). It's larger, a nicer store, and is stocked from a different warehouse (greater variety/better shipments/updates). The store here has gone significantly downhill since that opening. At the moment, there are a half dozen ceiling leaks which are being "caught" with tarps hung from the ceiling tiles and drained into 5 gallon buckets on the floor. Restocking is irregular and inconsistent. On-line inventory status is barely done for this store (there's a particular tote I purchase for media storage that's never shown to be in-stock in spite of there being as many as 15 on the shelves - that neighboring store's inventory is quite accurate and updated frequently). It's almost like they're trying to kill off the local store - and our town is twice the size of that neighbor with the better store... The manager tells me they've been trying to get a better store but nothing ever comes of it...

Big Lots is closing about 10% of their stores. 142 of the existing 1392 stores will close.

Why is Big Lots closing?

Big Lots announced in its filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission plans to open three new stores while closing up to 40 locations before the end of the year.
It its filing, Big Lots pointed to declining revenue due to a drop in net sales, along with prolonged sales slides across Big Lots' home furnishings division.
Big Lots also lost money through declining sales of consumables, food and seasonal items. In

The pullback in consumer spending amidst inflation hit hard in the first three months of 2024 and shadows expectations for the year.

There were only 2 stores with in driving distance from me and they both closed at the end of 2023.

My local store is closing. They never seemed to recover their business after last year's flooding. It took them 8 months to re-open, in March of this past spring, now they're closing for good. Seemed like their prices were much higher after they re-opened, so I hadn't shopped there much these past few months. The couple times I was there, I think the staff outnumbered customers.

My closest store is closing as well. DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K Blu-rays, CD and Vinyl are currently 20% off.

The Big Lots here in Salem is closing as well. I've already been there twice and got some titles I was looking for and one of those titles was an unexpected find: a DVD set of The Will Rogers Collection Volume 2!

I also got that set here a month or so back, before the closing announcement, so I probably didn't get as good a deal.

I recently went to a BL that I hadn't been to in over a year. Hopefully it won't close anytime soon. I got some good deals:

Farscape S01 Blu set for $9.99 - excellent & underrated sci-fi show w/great aliens/prosthetics & a solid story-line. I've seen the whole series in it's entirety years ago, but need to re-watch this.

Curb your Enthusiasm S01 DVD set for $8.99 - hilarious!

Hellraiser 1 (1987) DVD for $3.99 - iconic & well-done horror flick - excellent.

Child's Play 1 (1988) Blu for $6.99 - great horror movie; this was the Wal-mart exclusive?! Blu with the great stylized artwork/slipcover (2015). Glad that it ended up at BL, since I missed it earlier.

Note I got the last ones of each of these. Obviously, selection will vary between the various stores.

Unfortunately, this doesn't surprise me. I used to shop @ BL on a semi-regular basis pre-COVID & even in the first couple of years after COVID. And, in general - the store seemed to be somewhat busy during those years. Prices were very reasonable/affordable; they would typically have new product; and it was a good place to get some groceries.

In more recent years, one of the biggest sellers seemed to be new furniture, etc.

However, when I've gone 1-2 times this past summer - it's been nearly deserted.

Same with my store (which is closing). Though I also think they've raised their prices quite a bit so now they're often higher than a nearby Walmart, so many people just go there.

They did declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy today, but are hoping to re-organize. I think the article linked above was just about the store closings from a couple months ago.

  • Private equity firm Nexus Capital Management has agreed to buy Big Lots for $760 million, consisting of $2.5 million in cash plus its remaining debt.

Since the only stores within driving distance for me have closed, Big Lots is out of business for me. When I traveled for work, I saw them all over the country. Loved the deals on DVDs and blu rays which is pretty much all I bought there.
