What's the top 5 space battles ever made out there? Frankly, beside Star Wars, there's not much choice:

1- Return of the Jedi's final battle (simply astounding)
2- Star Wars' Trench Run
3- The Empire Strikes Back Asteroid Chase
4- Star Trek II's "naval" nebula battle
5- ... is that it??

The Last Starfighter

I've always wanted to fight a desperate battle against incredible odds.

One gunstar? Against the whole armada? It'll be a slaughter!

Also think the planetary invasion sequence in Starship Troopers is really well done, but probably not what you are thinking of in terms of a ship-to-ship space battle.

You're right, there aren't that many memorable ones to choose from. Here's my list, anyway:

1. Battle Over Endor - Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
2. Trench Run - Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
3. Asteroid Field Battle - Star Wars - Episode II - Attack of the Clones
4. Mutara Nebula Battle - Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan
5. Battle Over Naboo - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

The asteroid field sequence in The Empire Strikes Back is more of a chase than a real battle, so I didn't include it.

DS9's THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR blows away THE PHANTOM MENACE in my opinion.

Does Dave Bowman's battle of the wits against HAL count? :)

Is "DSP: THe Way of the Warrior" the episode where DS9 battles hundreds of Klingon warships?

I could also add the following not that great but memorable moments:

- Star Trek VI: The Enterprise and Excelsior against the uncloaked Klingon cruiser.

- The Ice Asteroids chase in TITAN A.E.

- Some scenes of BAttlestar Galactica (maybe)

The battle in WAY OF THE WARRIOR begins with the Defiant heading into Cardassian space to stop the Klingon fleet from killing a bunch of (probably) innocent Cardassians. The Klingons are the ones to withdraw from the Khitomer Accords (peace treaty) but it's the Starfleet vessel that first opens fire. Begin round 1!

After the Cardassians are rescued, the Defiant rushes back to the station. In round 2, we see Deep Space Nine defend itself against the Klingon fleet with their newly-completed weapons upgrades.

After the station's shields are breached, we are treated to round 3 -- the best hand-to-hand brawl in all of Trek! Kira sustains a flesh wound but manages to knock out her assailant before she hits the ground in pain. Worf busts out the new, efficient one-handed blades (called the mek'leth?) and uses them to gracefully open up a Klingon sized can of whoop ass. :)
