I'll take Ron to a theater with aisles between seats so wide that you can stretch your legs out in front of you and not touch the seat in front of you. A theater that has a lobby that is throwback art-deco and theaters that are splendidly decorated, complete with red velvet curtains. A theater that shows the historic "Lets all go to the lobby" trailer before every film.

I would not hesitate for a second to go to a theater like this one. I would also love to visit the Bijou Garage.

I have said these things before....

I don't like going to the movies for several reasons. First, my time is very valuable. To have 20 minutes added into the showtime for commercials and trailers (mostly commercials) infuriates me. I hate the commercialism of movie theaters and the fact that they tack on all this advertising without even passing on admission discounts to the viewer. I pay to see a film and I have to sit through advertisements.

Secondly, there's the obvious reason that involves unruly audience members who can't stop talking or won't turn off their phones.

In my old age, I have become a homebody. I put a lot of money into my home theater and I get more enjoyment watching films on my large screen. I realize I am in the minority here.

Saw this movie today. I'd been curious about it since I toured Sony Pictures in May and they showed us the trailer. Gotta say, it didn't disappoint. I loved the way they used music to help tell the story. I gave it 8 out of 10 on IMDB. Check it out if you get the chance.

What theater is this Mark?

The Coronado Village Theater. Its grand opening in 1947:

coronado1.jpg

It began falling into disrepair when theater attendance started declining in the 1980s. It was closed in 2000. After a $2.7 million renovation by the Vintage Theater chain, it reopened in 2011. The original single theater sat 600 people. With the remodel they carved some space out of the original theater for two much smaller 35 seat theaters. They could have still fit about 350 seats in the main theater but they opted to provide more space between seats instead. The current main theater seats 215.

We've been in all 3 theaters and the two smaller theaters are, frankly, TOO small. So, now we only attend when the film we want to see is in the main theater (#1).

What it looked like just before the restorations began:

Right after the restoration in 2011:

A very large panoramic view of the main theater (click the image for larger version):

When you sit in the main theater is is like you are sitting in San Diego Bay, with Coronado on the left and downtown San Diego on your right.

This article has a bunch of photos showing many of the details of the art-deco design of the theater:

Due to vacation crowds in the summer (the population of Coronado doubles in the summer), we generally stay away from the theater from late June to early September. Outside those months, it is pretty common that we're there for a Friday matinee when a film we want to see is opening in the main theater.

Technically a really great movie, story and character wise it was OK.

Tip my hat to Wright for intertwining the music with the onscreen action. Wish as much attention had been given to the story itself. Not fault of the cast as they all gave great performances.

As a bonus, got both the IT and Dark Tower trailers at the showing plus the movie trivia was Dark Tower which I aced and nabbed the number 1 spot!

In the theaters' defense, most films only run for a few weeks, and the vast majority of the ticket price collected in that time goes to the studios. I assume that the theaters get at least a cut of the advertising revenue.

Also, if you have a local theater with reserved seating, you can order your specific seat ahead of time and plan to show up when the ads are ending. :)

There is something wrong with a business model where the greed of studios basically cripples the venue that their films are designed to be best shown in. It is ridiculous when an experience that should be unique is turned into nothing more than a gigantic version of watching TV in your living room, except the snacks are more expensive and inconvenient to get and the company you share the room with is like having an obnoxious neighbour walk into your house, plop themselves down, and immediately ruin the atmosphere by acting like a jerk.

I remember when they first tried commercials with the movie in Southern Ontario. People booed so lustily and threw so much food, theatre owners stopped for a while. Now it is ubiquitous. I wonder why the present generation doesn't care?

Because they are busy texting on their phones during the commercials that I bet they consider as "free for all time" as they see it. They can talk and text for a good 15 minutes knowing most folks won't yell at them for doing so. Most will stop after the commercials, but as we know there is a good percentage that continue.

I wasn't going to buy the 4K UHD due to the cost of the disc; however, after watching a couple of minutes of that opening scene I decided to get this.

Not bad. Unusual way of timing the visuals to the BGM. There is one character switch that was pretty hard to believe. It didn't really ring true.

For all of its violence and profanity, it is interesting how traditional this film is in its ending.
