I guess we're growing confident that STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS will get a domestic 3D release, even if only as part of a 5-disc box set. THE JUNGLE BOOK and previous movies made in 3D (FROZEN, BIG HERO 6), that did not get a U.S. 3D video release can be had from Europe.

But I am discouraged to find, after research, that THE FINEST HOURS, released theatrically in 3D, is getting no dimensional release anywhere in the world. I hope that is not the start of an ugly new trend by this fantastically erratic and collector-unfriendly company.

That;s incorrect. There seems to be a couple region A releases (Brazil and Japan) and Region C releases (India) and ??Region B Czech Rep.

Not the easiest or cheapest to obtain, but they are available on Ebay or some of the import sites like AmazonJp or CDJapan

The Finest Hours has been released in 3-D in India and Japan.

You can buy the Indian version from this Ebay dealer.

You can buy the Japanese version here.
Wow...never thought to look in India, and I by-passed Japan because they have never had a 3D Disney (almost) exclusive. Thanks for the info.I will widen my "research" next time around.

But, how does this weird company determine in which countries a particular 3D will get a proper Blu-ray release? It's usually been Europe, now it's...India?

I purchased the 3D release of The Finest Hours from India on Ebay. It is region free. Tried to import it directly from Amazon India, but they would not ship it to the US.

India often has Disney 3D -- Planes 2 is the other one that is often imported (or bought from a couple India Ebay specialists in Houston). Even the Mexican item is much cheaper and easier to get, some folks prefer the English covers,

They even had Ratatouille, but in the really bizarre situation it was Region B locked (India is Region C) so it was basically just a straight rip of the French/UK release.

Need for Speed 3D was released in Brazil as region A (along with mexico), but the EU version was region locked

Brazil and India don't seem to have a retailer who will ship directly to US so often you haveto go through EBAY or find a buddy in Brazil to buy/ship.

FROZEN is available in Australia in 3-D. I bought a copy recently for less than $A15. I am sure that Disney have no region or zone codes so you should be able to import a copy without any problems. All my USA 3-D Disney releases were code/zone free. 3-D is becoming less popular today and this is why many films have more 2-D sessions than 3-D. Maybe parents do not like their young children seeing films in 3-D. Having a region code listed on the cover on a disc means nothing as many major companies releases are zone/code free but they seldom state that.

You can import dvds/ blurays directly from India from the country's biggest supplier : www.induna.com. They have a great and fast service .They are much cheaper than other countries and their site is in English and most or all of the Indian releases have English subtitles. You can email them as they speak English and your reply will be in English. No language problems with this company. I have even spoke to them over the phone without any problems.I have bought from them many times (but not bluray 3-D-only in 2-D) and the quality is brilliant and they have NO region codings. All their releases are legitimate and not pirated. As India is new to producing films in 3-D,they have limited Indian films in 3-D. I am not sure if they sell Disney titles as I have never inquired regarding this. All the dvds/blurays that I have bought from them had English covers.(maybe I was lucky).Check with them beforehand rather than take my word for it. Indian dvd shops are very common in Sydney,Australia- there are three in my suburb.

Haven't heard of them before. I've been in many threads where folks were asking about India releases and a direct source.

Good to know there is a direct route if needed.

EDIT
Just did a quick search -- the only Disney Animated Blurays I could find were Jungle Book and Jungle Book 2. Filtered BD and Animation and came up with 3 titles total

Filtered English + Blurays and found about 15 titles -- Gandhi, Darjeeling, JB, JB2 , Life of Pi, LoP 3D and Avatar. About 250 Blurays total and most of them appear to be Indian produced movies which is nice, but may not be much help for obtaining US/EU productions like Planes 2 or Finest Hours.

Does it also include the 2D version, or is it 3D only? I couldn't really tell from the packaging in the eBay listing.

Josh: The Finest Hours 3D from India is 3D only, at least on my Samsung player.
When the 3D/2D option is displayed, you are not able to select 2D.

Thanks! I'm hesitant to spend so much when it doesn't even include a 2D copy, but I'm really curious to see the movie? Was it good? How was the 3D? Worth it?

Josh: The movie is just OK, given the subject matter. It is well-made and definitely helped by the 3D, which is atmospheric and non-headache inducing!
