...is this something they can fix, or will the TV be 'totalled'? Still under Mits warranty, but have the Magnolia Service plan as well.

Can you even replace just one part, or would the whole light engine need to be replaced?

If it's under warranty, make a service call and they'll take care of the rest.

Sometimes it is just the red cellophane (actually a piece of polarized glass) that fades (is bleached by the intense projector beam) and can be slipped out and replaced.

Usually if a panel goes in a shower of, or bunch of stripes of, dead pixels all three panels have to be replaced because they are glued to a prism. By this time it is easier to replace the entire light engine on some models.
