Already on home video, but look who's back in theaters:

Now less than $500k away from matching the domestic total of the first film from 2018. May not quite make it, but pretty good considering the barriers at today's box office.

And so, we settle for Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home rising to No. 1 in its 6th weekend with $14.1M, putting its massive domestic total at $721.5M, and Paramount/Spyglass Media’s Scream in second with a better-than-anticipated drop of -59%, with $12.4M and a $51.3M ten-day total. That second weekend ease is a bit better than Scream 4 (-61%) and richer than the previous installment, which did $7M in weekend 2. Among the franchise’s second weekends, Scream 2022 ranks third behind Scream 3 ($16.3M) and Scream 2 ($13.9M).

Spider-Man‘s cume by Sunday keeps the blockbuster title in 4th place among all movies at the domestic box office. If the webslinger is going to beat Avatar and become the third-highest grossing movie of all-time in the US and Canada, Spider-Man: No Way Home has to do another $40.1M+ in business.

Can it get there? It’s possible.

Avatar was about blue vampires? I haven't seen it since the theater, but I don't recall that. ;)

I don't think Disney was going to make any more Hercule Poirot movies with Branagh no matter what, since that was a franchise nurtured by the old Fox regime. But that box office, while not terrible by pandemic standards, will give them a stronger argument for not moving forward with a third one.

I thought Orient Express was fine but did not love it. So under the circumstances I have no problem at all with waiting for this film to hit streaming. Therefore, I can't speak to the quality of the new film firsthand yet. I'm sure Branaugh made something slick and polished, as he always does. But it isn't calling me to the theater.

That being said, I think that they would make a third if this one became a smash hit. They like money, so I don't think they would be too proud to continue something that results in them making money. Also, I was reading in one of the trades (Deadline?) that Nile actually shot in 2019 after the merger was completed. Although it was in development when the merger happened, Disney could have chosen to scrap it. They chose not to, which means they were okay with inheriting this franchise.

Like you mentioned, I think the bigger problem here is that this one isn't going to make them money. This was budgeted and greenlit before the pandemic, so a $90 million wouldn't have seemed excessive. But now, with the theatrical marketplace so fundamentally changed from when the film was developed, it is almost impossible for this film to make money within the theatrical window at that cost. Older audiences are likely to be drawn to Agatha Christie adaptations because of how long her work has been around, but that demographic is the one that has been the most reluctant to return to theaters right now. And, of course, we have no idea how long Covid-19 will be a major problem, so holding the film any longer wasn't really practical either.

The weekend's two wide releases seem to be overperforming based on Friday numbers vs. early predictions (based on 4-day holiday weekend).

Uncharted expected around $47-50 million (the-numbers.com had a prediction of just short of $40 m).

Dog expected around $15 million (prediction was around $5 m, which it made on Friday alone).

It must be contractual, but my local theater has Death on the Nile on the largest screen and it looks like it’s selling about four tickets a show, and they’ve got Uncharted in one of the smaller rooms and each show is filling up. Imagine they wouldn’t have done that if they didn’t have to. Disney is known for demanding the largest screen for a certain number of weeks regardless of performance, which as a fan of their movies I appreciate (get to see it on a good screen whether it’s day one or day ten) but must be frustrating when the film you’re looking to see is the competition.

FWIW, "Uncharted" owns the IMAX and Dolby Cinema screens at my 2 closest AMCs, whereas "DotN" is on "regular" screens.

So Disney must not force all theaters to keep "DotN" on the biggest screens.

IMAX/DC are separate contracts from regular screens in the scenario I was discussing. The studios contract directly with IMAX and Dolby for those releases and which theaters get them and even what showtimes are programmed are usually determined by IMAX and Dolby rather than the local theater itself.
