I had a lot of fun with The Lost City yesterday and am glad to see it doing well.

There's also a bit of irony in the Academy-snubbed Spider-Man: No Way Home becoming the third movie ever to gross $800 million in North America on the same day that the Academy is expected to bestow the Best Picture award to a streaming film. Because Netflix and Apple don't report grosses from the theatrical runs given to their films, a win for CODA or The Power of the Dog would make it the lowest-grossing Best Picture winner on record by default, because there is no record.

Of course, some people have attended those films in theaters because they have received some degree of theatrical release, but the studios don't want to report that information.

That's a really good start for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and an atrocious drop-off for Morbius. The fact that The Batman is still in the top five this far into its run is impressive and demonstrates why Warner Bros. should not put it on HBO Max on April 19 as planned.

It's also really nice to see Everything Everywhere All At Once expanding well in the sixth spot. I saw it yesterday and it is wonderful.

I disagree. They’re separate audiences - the people waiting to watch it on HBO Max won’t see it in a theater no matter what, and the people choosing to see it in theaters now are doing so because they prefer to see it in a theater.

Other titles like Encanto and Sing 2 have been available digitally since December and are still pulling in money, and Spider-Man has been pulling in money despite an early March digital premiere.

Let people see the movies in the formats and venues they prefer. If the movies are good enough to find an audience, they’ll find it.

Charts with Dan for this week. He points out that Morbius had the steepest second weekend drop-off of any film based on a Marvel comics character ever.

Looks like it just squeaked past the 72% drop of Dark Phoenix. If it ends up around DP's $236 million worldwide, it'll be profitable with a budget of only $75 million (unlike DP which cost $200 million to produce).

I agree that it will clearly end up being profitable. But it doesn't seem that very many people actually like it. So in that sense, it still represents a problem for Sony. They clearly want to be able to build out their imposter MCU universe with their villains. But if the reaction is the bad, they won't be able to count on success in the future.

They may as well pull the plug, IMO. I lost interest when it was apparent that it was less about the "Fantastic Beasts" and more about a prequel to Harry Potter.

I was hoping/expecting a series of adventures with Newt Scamander studying, tracking, and resolving difficult situations with magical animals. I'm not interested in multiple films about wizard politics.

I kinda liked the first film, didn't care for the second when the direction of the story became clear, and have no interest in the new film.
