I've got a Series 2 Tivo and VCR I use alot. That, along with the fact that I've got some vision problems that apparently don't allow me to see the full benefit of HD would probably steer me to a SD CRT model if my set dies. The only problem is that I don't think you can even buy one of those...
Is there a particular brand or type of LCD TV that does a better job of displaying standard def content than others?
I'd also like to know of all widescreen lcd tvs have the ability to show standard def content without it being stretched and distorted? Are there menu settings to allow that on...
I thought the difference was usually more than $5. Recent news stories seem to show what the choice will be in the future. I've got time to wait until the prices even out, unless my standard def. TV blows up. LOL Thanks, BGC
Well, I burned a +R DL disc and set the booktype to DVD-Rom and it seems to play properly in the Pan CP72. I don't understand why commercially pressed discs show up as DVD-Rom or if there is an actual DVD-Rom disc that is physically different. Anyway, the discussion of will they or won't they...
I'm not sure why they show up that way, but they do. I suppose I need one that will play the RW discs + and -. I'll have to do a test to see if the one I have will read a +R with booktype changed. BGC
That may be what they mean, but changing the booktype setting to DVD-Rom is supposed to make +r/rw media more compatible. Also, the commercial pressed discs that movies come on show up in the disc info tool as DVD-Rom. BGC
Hi, Which brands of standalone players have the best compatibility with DVD recordable formats (+r, +rw, -rw, DVD-Rom). My Pan. CP72 manual says it won't play DVD-Rom, but I checked a few of my commercial DVDs and they all have a booktype of DVD-Rom so I don't get why it says it won't play...
Anyone know which recordable formats will play in a CP72? I know some of the recorders let you change some flag to make one type of disc look like another for greater compatibility but I'm not sure what that's called. I'm also interested to know if the Dual Layer discs will play (+R or -R)...
Which would you choose and why? I'm leaning to the Onkyo due to the 1 year parts & LABOR warranty and the fact that you can buy a 2 year extended warranty directly from Onkyo for $30. So I'm looking at a refurb witha 90 day parts and labor warranty vs. a New unit with a 3 year parts and labor...
Do the Denon DVD players use the same parts as Panasonic players? I thought I saw mention of that but don't remember what models it was referring to. thanks, BGC
With my TV set, I don't think it is. The part is around $60 and who knows how much the labor would be. I saw in a thread somewhere that Panasonic didn't even want to repair these and were trying to replace them with something else which there is no equivalent with the same chipset for now...
Hi, Is it ok to run a player without the output cables connected to the tv? I need to run mine to investigate a burning smell but want to move it out of it's current location in case it decides to catch on fire. BGC
Oh, it was used several days before the burning smell was noticed. There aren't many (or any?) vent holes in the thing so I don't see how too much dust could get inside but ya never know. But I really don't think dust was the culprit. I'm going to take the cover off and run it for a while to see...
Silly me, that's what I thought I had. LOL You would think that a changer would be built to play quite a few back to back, especially with sequential play being one of the modes. So at least 5 back to back is part of the design. I wonder how long one of those 400 disc changers is designed to...
Is playing movies back to back to back all day long player abuse? I posted in another thread about a burning smell coming from my cp-72. The thing was warm to the touch, not hot by any means and no warmer than it is after playine 1 movie. BGC
Makes you wonder about the futility of checking all the player reviews. When I bought it, it was the "one to have" and now it turns out these things are crapping out left and right. Especially annoying since the entire time I've had it I've probably used it less than most members of this forum...
Hi, After an all day viewing marathon where the player was running almost constantly, I noticed a burning smell when I left the room and then came back. I've noticed similar smells before from new electric appliances during their first several uses. The player appears to be working ok but...
Hi, Thanks for the replies. I'd heard widescreen and anamorphic before, but never seen those 2 abreviations. I always buy the widescreen version, even for my 27" Toshiba. BGC
Hi, I saw in the weekly price roundup of dvds that some were sold in both OAR and MAR versions, with a note to choose the right one. What is the difference and which is the "right" one? Thanks, BGC
Hi, Should the length of the speakerwire to the surround speakers be equal? I need about 35' for one side and 15' for the other. Wondering if the mismatched length would cause any problems? Thanks, BrianGC
My receiver says use speakers with nominal impedance of 8ohm to 16ohm. Some speakers I was looking at say they have nominal impedance of 4ohm to 8ohm, are these compatible or will they cause trouble? Thanks, BrianGC
Hi, I've got a bad N-CenterII, it causes very bad magnetic interference on one side. I contacted Harman and the Northride series is in transition to the next model, so they don't have any N-CenterII's to exchange for the one I have. I was asked if I would accept an Infinity Entra Center...
