Charles Kimbrough has died at the age of 86.

He is best known for playing dignified anchor Jim Dial on Murphy Brown for the sitcom’s original 10-season run between 1988 and 1998, a performance that earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 1990. He also reprised the role as a recurring guest star on the CBS revival in 2018.

In addition to his television work, he was a renowned stage actor, earning a Tony nomination for his performance as Harry in Stephen Sondheim’s Company.

He is survived by his son John, his sister Linda, and his stepdaughter, Holly Howland.

Since I played Harry in a local production of Company some years ago, I have felt a bond with Charles Kimbrough all these years, so reading about his passing this afternoon has really affected me. Always enjoyed his performances. He's left a fine legacy with his television performances and the filmed/taped productions of his Sondheim musicals. R.I.P.
