Actually, the back cover copyright says 2005. That was part of how I came up my wacky theory but I forgot to include it in that my other post. :)

EDIT: That's what I mean. Those other releases didn't experience those delays but by the time that those discs were manufactured, Universal had worked to fix part of their DVD-18 problem. If the Dune discs were made before that and they've just been sitting then they'd be messed up.

Either way, it's not like Uni is ever gonna cop to having the problem so they'll never acknowledge when/if they fixed it.

what are the dates of the VOB files?
that may give a clue somewhat of when they were manufactured-just a possiblillity...

VOB files from Feb 2005 might suggest that they were manufactured to disc in, oh, say, April, then would have sat in a warehouse in Mexico(?) before the hammer fell..
And they are selling this batch now. IF the VOBs are say, from November, then there is some other reason...continued carelessness on Universals part.

Well after my replacement DVD also froze I've returned it as well and will wait for Universal to sort things out... which may mean I'll wait for the eventual HD version to come out.

Thanks Hans, just sent one out.

The VOB files on my disc are dated 9/27/05. I can't remember and don't have time to look, but what was the last release date prior the actual one for this title?

I don't think it's player related. I have 3 including a new OPPO which plays EVERYTHING I've ever thrown at it and my first "Frighteners" disc had a problem in the same place on all. The replacement was fine. I lucked out with my 2nd copy.

:)

Andrew, looking waaaaay back in the thread, it was supposed to be released on May 10. So if the files say September, theses discs must have been made after the other good DVD-18s were released.

Looks like giving Universal the benefit of the doubt was wrong. I should've known better. :)

I don't know think it's player related just because the two DVD-18s that I've gotten that were messed up had an imperfection that you could see on the disc. Plus, my replacement for one of them has worked fine. Hopefully, my Dune replacement will too.

By imperfection, do you mean that mark that vaguely resembles a water stain? I have hundreds of DVDs with those type of marks that play w/o difficulty.

Bought this today, played fine on my roommates baseline 5 disc panisonic changer w/o problem on the theatrical side.

I found it pretty enjoyable, too, but there are most certainly problems in the movie, and the print condition is a bit crap.

I'd still recommend it though, although the fact that Uni is sticking to DVD-18's continues to baffle me.

I watched the extended cut last night and it froze at about 1 hr 36 min. I skipped a head to the next chapter and it played. It froze again at the end.

I'm going to return it in a couple of weeks, just in case a new shipment of new discs hits.

By the way, the PQ was not too bad and the sound was quite nice. Some good LFE during the thumper scenes. The theatrical cut is better though -- I had forgotten that some scenes were cut from the TV version due to the violence (Harkkonen pulling out that kid's heart plug, Idaho getting head-screwed, etc). I like the violence -- sue me.

Just got mine yesterday, and haven't tried it yet. My first thought on seeing the snazzy metal cover was that it would scratch easily.

Good LFE? Excellent. My R2 looks good but sounds mediocre. They forget the entire .1 channel it seems - there isnt even a TRACE of LFE on the disk!

Yeah, I have plenty of discs with water stains too but it's not the usual one of those. I really don't know how to describe it other than it looks like there's an actual physical imperfection inside the disc where the info is and the disc is its usual smooth self. :)

The two times I've had the problem, I've seen the same thing.

EDIT: I've watched the theatrical version on my replacement copy and so far that's fine. Onward to the special features and Smithee version.

I didn't have any problems playing the Lynch Cut or Deleted Scenes on my 3 year old Sony player either (although I have had problems with Universal's 18's in the past).

At what time code is the layer change on each side so I can play through that point which is always the worst spot?

2 firsts occurred last night, as I watched the extended version; the 2nd of those being an understanding as to why Lynch had his name removed as director. The term "extended" is a misnomer; it should be "extended, altered, and deleted". I'd appreciate anyone, with inside knowledge, explaining why the following took place:

1.A different actor, from the theatrical version, seems to be used for the navigator's voice at the beginning, but then in a brief flashback, it's back to the movie voice.
2.Approx. 1/2 of the Baron's introductory scenes are cut.
3.During the Harkonnen invasion, the scene of the weirding modules having been destroyed's missing.
4.The desert "water of life" sequence's considerably shortened.

I'm sure I've not caught all the deletions, but I simply ask WHY?

In my opinion, some of the additions add important expositional meaning, but that most, not all, of the deleted scenes from the movie side weren't germane to this form of media.

Finally, my cut would've been the full intro (not the one used in the movie) by Virginia Madsen, the original movie + the extended's additions, and 2 of the deleted scenes.

I've never read the books, but do enjoy this film. That being the case, the script's strict adherence to the book's unknown/unimportant to me.

Thanks to anyone able to shed light on why the above took place.

RonaldB,

I downloaded this app, and I tried to use it last night, but it claims my DVD-ROM, an NEC DV-5700A, does not support that feature. Any idea what NEC drives support a Disc Quality scan?

Currently, I am using DVDInfo to perform a CRC check on my Universal DVD-18s. I'll have to check what speed it is running at, if possible. I didn't realize that could affect the results. Anyone know what a typical DVD player playing a DVD at normal playback runs at?

This sort of computer hardware knowledge is a little out of my league, and it is a damn shame one has to resort to this to know if they received a quality product from Universal. Anyway, if there is a more appropriate forum here or elsewhere online to learn about this stuff, please point me to it.

Incidently, since I started this 'fun' little project last night, I have had Casino show 17 bad sectors on side B and The Wolf Man: The Legacy Collection show none. I still have quite a few to go through... Joy.

Bob, to paraphrase Orson Welles, they let the studio janitor edit a 3-hour version of Dune for TV.
177mins including a 9 min prologue which I'm sure everyone skips after hearing it once, unfinished effects etc But to us Dune fans, well me anyway, just to see these 40min (31mins if you don't count the prologue) of extra footage dropped into a film we love and are so familiar with is exciting enough, yes it would have been great if Lynch had overseen a new edit, but it seems pigs will fly before that happens. ;)

I got my copy today and I'm about to watch the 3-hour 'Smithee', in widescreen for the first time. One day I may attempt to recut it myself and own my own personal edit of Dune, with the original infinitely better prologue. :)
