Film Synopsis

The Little Mermaid is visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall’s live-action reimagining of Disney’s beloved animated musical classic, the story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy. “The Little Mermaid” is directed by Rob Marshall with a screenplay by David Magee, and is produced by Marc Platt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, John DeLuca and Rob Marshall.

Wow, that is a 56-day window for the digital version. That's relatively long.

I'm surprised there are no deleted scenes listed on here. Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote a new song for Triton which was filmed but got cut which they said in interviews would be on the home release. I would have liked to see that.

Rob Marshall has usually done audio commentaries in the past too, so it's interesting that there isn't one this time. Even though I didn't like the movie, I would have been interested to hear what he had to say if there had been one.

Halle Bailey is great in this movie, but unfortunately the movie itself isn't as good as she is in it. So I'll pass. But that is a great-looking steelbook.

Like many others I’m a bit distressed by this film, and the use of a non-mermaid in the role of Ariel, when there were several fine mermaids working in the industry to whom the role could have been given. Among them Ann Blyrhe’s granddaughter, who I believe is SAG.

It also cannot go unnoticed that there is not a single mermaid in an upper level position at a Hollywood studio.

I saw this 4K cover art:

But according to Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits, the 4K disc will only be available in retailer-exclusive variants.

Bill Hunt said:
Now then, the main piece of announcement news today is that Disney has officially set their live-action The Little Mermaid (2023) for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 9/19, with the Digital release dropping on 7/25. Here’s the catch though: The physical 4K release will only be available in retail-exclusive SKUs, including one at Best Buy (in Steelbook packaging), one at Walmart (packed with a collectible pin), and the other at the Disney Movie Club (with a lithograph). The 4K UHD release will include Dolby Atmos audio, while the Blu-ray will have 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

Disney previously pulled this stunt with Strange World earlier this year, but it would be a massive understatement to say that The Little Mermaid has made a lot more money and is much more well-known to the general public than Strange World. So for them to do this with this particular title is a surprise to me.

Variety says Triton's deleted song "Impossible Child" will appear alongside the film on Disney+. According to the press release, this is not on the disc, it is not on there, so Disney appears to be using it as a streaming exclusive.

Disney+ does in fact have the deleted Triton musical number, "Impossible Child," among the bonus features for this film. I watched that scene last night. It's not very good, but it is there. So they are once again reserving significant supplements to go on Disney+ instead of the disc version.
