What's the chance that two films, based upon stage plays by the incomparable Bernard Shaw, would arrive on Blu-ray concurrently?
In this case it's Shaw's satirical take on the revolution in the American Colonies toward his native England.
Two American actors, Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, are joined by uber British thespian Sir Laurence Olivier, and the results are odd, but interesting.
As a Blu-ray, from the MGM library via Kino Lorber, it has its positive and negatives.
A nice gray scale, with good black levels, from a quality film element, with little grain, is hampered by an old transfer, which has the image constantly moving within the frame -- sometimes appearing almost to twitch. On a large screen it's almost enough to be headache inducing.
There is occasional minus density, that aside from one huge honking piece, we can excuse, as well as some dirt on what appears to be a fine grain master.
All in all, it's a typical MGM master, that would have serviced DVD well. Like many others, it's not really ready for Blu-ray prime time.
