there is a pair of these locally and I am wondering if they are decent speakers. I am also wondering if they will work for most kinds of music, I listen to anything from hip hop to death metal to soul to blues to funk to old time country to rock to metal and so on. Time very important because they are at a second hand store and I will either buy them or not buy them based on what you folks say. thanks for the help in advance

You really need to demo these speakers. Generally speaking, the only person who can judge the speakers is you. If they sound good to you, then they go for it. Having said that, I personally love Yamaha for their electronics, but have don't think they are as good when it comes to speakers.
