I currently have a 5 year old rear projection TV. In the near future I will get a HDTV, but for now I can not justify the purchase. Would I see any difference in picture quality viewing TV and/or DVD through a HTPC on my current TV?

Probably not. The whole point of HTPC is providing high resolution output to HDTV/data displays. If you get a video card with TV output, you technically have HTPC, but are missing the majority of the "point". MOst video cards with TV output are low quality anyway- so unless you can get VGA output via 15 pin to your set, it's probably not worth it.

So I would say unless you're looking to take advantage of current computer parts cost (AMD chips dirt cheap)-- then there is no advantage for you to build now- rather I would wait until you have your new set...
