I think it makes a difference when the the source is relatively modern like "FMJ".

If this was a movie from 1937, then not so much, but given the potential quality of a recording from 1987, I think lossy likely restricts the mix...
Interesting; I wouldn't think as much, but I'm not a mono purist (I view films with these soundtracks where appropriate, of course, to respect the intention of the filmmakers, but I wouldn't personally get in a twist about a lossy vs. lossless mono mix).

I wouldn't say I'm "in a twist" - just disappointed that the mono mix doesn't get presented as well as possible...

I always mix up the ratios when it comes to the more screen-filling kind; is the 1.85:1 the type with the small slivers of black area?
Yes, 1.78 is the full screen, 1.85 has small bars on the top and bottom and 1.66 has smallish bars on the sides.
