I cant think of a pop band that wrote catchier tunes than The Flaming Lips, and I never get tired of listening to it.
I defy anyone to listen to Transmitions From The Satelite Heart,Clouds Taste Metallic,Hit TO Death In THe Future Head or In A Priest Driven Ambulance and not sing along with it.

Also the 60s Rolling Stones(19th Nervous Breakdown, Mothers Little Helper etc)

For beats, rhythm, and hooky riffs and sheer joyful abandon:
Love Rollercoaster[live version] -- The Ohio Players
For beautifully played & recorded elegaic harmonies, symphonic textures, thoughtful lyrics, and a complex song structure, as recorded by studio obsessives:
Russian Hill -- Jellyfish
The ideal party would somehow manage to work in both ["Say what?!"]. :D

"Pretend To Be Nice" - Josie And The Pussycats (really Letters To Cleo)
Not really. It was written by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne, Ivy) with vocals by Kay Hanley. The other folks from Letters To Cleo had nothing to do with it.

I'm thrilled to see Jellyfish mentioned. "Bellybutton" and "Spilt Milk" have both slipped into my rotation over the past couple of days.

I Should Have Known Better - The Beatles
Brown-Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
Let's Stay Together - Al Green
California Girls - The Beach Boys
Fly Me To the Moon - Frank Sinatra

Dang, you're right...Forgot about that. Thanks for straightening it out Adam.

You know, I almost put down Fountains of Wayne in my list as well ("Red Dragon Tattoo" is a great tune).

Oh heck yeah..."Don't Dream It's Over" ranks right up there with me too. Crowded House was a much under appreciated band throughout most of their run.

But Neil Finn is still doing his thing...check out his latest "One All" (or "One Nil" as the import).

Also check out the DVD Neil Finn & Friends--7 Worlds Collide...very good stuff...a highlight being the version of The Smiths "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" with Johnny Marr along on guitar and backup vocals. That is some good stuff.

I could go on forever with older tunes, but when I was driving to work the other day listening to Jimmyeatworld's 'Bleed American' disc, I couldn't stop thinking that 'The Middle' is just an absolutely flawless pop song.

It might not be my perfect pop song in the long haul, but it certainly is a perfect pop song!
