My 3 new TIVO Premieres I pre-ordered earlier this month are set to ship tomorrow. These will be my first TIVOS since I had DirecTV. About 9 months ago I switched to FIOS and I HATE the DVR's. I'm super excited to replace these clunkers with something that actually makes sense.

Anyone else getting the new TIVOs?

David,

Congrats on your new Tivo. I am a Fios owner myself and
based on what I had heard (and being a former Tivo owner
with DirecTV) I went with the Tivo Series 3 HD units.

Nothing beats Tivo.

As for Tivo Premier. I am somewhat interested in upgrading
but thus far the reviews have been less than stellar on these
new units. There was a writeup in the Wall Street Journal about
three weeks ago that gave it a mediocre review citing it might
not be worth the upgrade from the Series 3 units.

One of my friends at work just got his Tivo Premier THX
and is having problems with it freezing up. He is going to
return it and try another unit.

It sounds great that these new units support 1080 in the
menu system. I tire of my series 3 unit going through
momentary lapses of screen jibber as it switches from 1080
television content to 780 menu content. However, I am
rather concerned about the freeze issue my friend is having
and am wondering if Tivo rushed these babies out too soon.

I have really been tempted by tivo, and was waiting for the new release with great anticipation. I have seen the same dismal reviews that Ronald has been coming across. The worst video review I have seen was on engadget. There is some serious lag going on when you click on anything in the on-screen menu. It sounds to me like they rushed it out to market and that only time will tell if they can improve on this new tivo or be forced to come out with a better one.(probably unlikely).

So, it I guess for the time being I'll check out my cable companies dvr. :(

Hi Ronald,

The Premieres have a software bug causing the lockups (happens when you press the TiVo button). There is supposed to be a fix soon. Exchanging the unit will not help. As a workaround, tell your friend switch to the old SD menus.

If I already had HD units, I probably would wait to upgrade. The new Premiere's are faster (especially for transfers) and the HD menus are nice, but not quite there yet. I can see where they are going with the interface and I really like it. Its just not quite ready for prime time.

Now, if I was buying them for the first time, I would absolutely get the Premiere. They are not nearly as slow at the reviews state (there was a big update done after many of the reviews that may have helped).

Another plus.. They are not UGLY silver color.

Jon,

They are not as slow as the Engadget review makes it seem. Plus, you can still use the old menus and they are fast. I've been told they are faster than the Series 3.

Can these be used with DTV? I really need a DVR but don't really feel like paying $200 + monthly lease to DirecTV

There's going to be a DirecTV version of the Premiere coming out the second half of 2010, according to TIVO's CEO in an interview with Cnet.tv's Molly Wood. Have patience, my friend. You'll be able to Tivo to your hearts content in just a few more months!
