Evan, is it possible that your filmstrip is the shot of the lonely asteroid tumbling by the camera... can't remember what point this occurs in the movie, and it's hard to tell from your photos, but that's my best guess.

A good guess Jerry, but alas not it. In that scene, the meteors come from the left, and the far-away image of the Discovery is never out of frame.

Mine has the white blob on the right, and total blackness everywhere else. I even pulled it out just a little and shown a light behind it, but it yielded no clue.

My strip is simply horrible, its origins and purpose... still a total mystery.

Sweet...though Modine has always struck me as a bit of a dim bulb...I hope it's a compelling read after coming out of his head...

1) Love the irony of an Anthony Mann film )'He Walked By Night')
on the marquee in one of the Kubrick photos considering what
happened on 'Spartacus'

2) Did anybody else ordering from Amazon.com get a VERY
sexually explict ad from the company that made the book?

If you mean Taschen's book catalogue ... yes I did.

Seriously, my only problem with it was the cover. If the publisher wants to be out there ... then be out there and don't censure your own materials. If you don't want to show the whole image, don't show the image at all. Common sense, really and bad judgement for someone in the free press promoting books about free expression.

I got a catalog with the book that had a very gay porn looking Batman and Robin on the cover. And in the mail I got one with Tupac all with soap bubble all over him. My friend was over at the time and he was like "What the hell!?1"

I'm thinking of ordering this from Amazon now, but I see the film strip comes only in the first pressing's run. Is it safe to think this is still in the first pressing?

Safe? It's never been safe ... (sorry got caught up in Marathon Man for a moment) ...

Safe? Very safe plus with Amazon if you don't like it you can return it with no hazzles.

Btw, if anyone is in Chicago or visiting, they are screening Kubrick's films at the Gene Siskel Theatre (downtown). I think it has about 10 days remaining.

Nice theatre and knowledgeable crowd. Large attendance for The Killing. I also saw Strangelove, Lolita, Paths of Glory. Weird they don't advertise it better ... not even a flyer on the window if you were to walk by.

Crap, it's unavailable from Amazon.com now, so much for the 2001 film strips. . . but maybe it will be reissued at a much cheaper price now.

I bought it from Amazon UK last week, and it still has the film strip. Mine is from the scene where the stewardess does the 180° walk up the wall. :)

Actually I didn't, but I have noticed many a fancy looking Taschen book end up in the bargain bins after first being offered at higher prices.
