I have a Yamaha HTR 5830 receiver and a Yamaha YST SW215 subwoofer. The receiver has one sub output (RCA), the sub has 2 (RCA) inputs. L/Mono and R. Question is should I connect as sub instructions suggest, sub out on receiver to L/Mono on sub? or.. use a Y adapter and connect to both L/Mono and R on sub? Will it sound any different?

Just use the left/mono. It is a mono signal anyway. The only thing using a 'Y' cable would do is affect the signal strength. It would have no effect on the sound except for the relative volume, which would be calibrated back to normal anyway.
