What is the purpose of sub placement?

Increase it's volume?
or
Improve (flatten) it's response?
or
Other?

Better integration with other speakers, notably front speakers. Smoother response (less hump, boom).

Here's a "rule of thumb" I've heard more than once:

o in a corner for maximum SPL
o 3/5 along the longest wall for flattest freq response

Some people say that right behind your listening position sounds really good too, but alot of people don't have that flexibility.
