Did anyone else catch the Sopranos double feature tonight? It was extremely impressive in HD. I flipped back to my regular cable picture to compare, but it was no contest. The 16x9 picture was clean and crisp. I am not able to get it in 5.1, nor do I know if it is available. Does anyone else know?

It is not available in 5.1. It was a great 2-hour episode except for the hack job they did with the mother. What were they thinking? Ugh!

I thought both episodes were very disappointing. Last season started out like that and picked it up around episode 4, so let's hope that happens again.
And yeah, what the hell was that scene with the mom all about? It was like watching a porno where they just throw in a totally unrelated scene.

Hey Scott. In case you did not know, that actress died after last season.
That was old footage of her head and voice superimposed on a stand-in actress. Horrible...just horrible.

So, without Nancy Marchand around to...well, you know...film any scenes, all they had were outtakes and a stand-in, and some unfinished business about the stolen airline tickets. But I agree, the scene was awkward and probably could have just been written around without her making any appearance.
Back to the original topic, the show looked great in HD. I am now tempted to go out and get the first season box set, as it is in DD 5.1 and 16x9 widescreen.

Since I discovered this series on DVD, I have missed the entire second season. I was watching the brief synopsis with great intensity to try to catch up with what transpired. I thought the first episode last night was a little lacking but I thought the second one was fine. I think this is a great show and I am disappointed that I missed it the first two times around. I am glad that I am seeing the ones that I do in either 480p or 1080i.

Say it ain't so!!!!! Last night we found out that Tony uses BLOSE speakers!!! The kid that came over to watch the old VHS movie said he loved that direct reflecting sound... What a crock. We have prasied the writers in the past for putting cutting edge stuff like DVDs into the stories but now this?
Tony needs to stop a truck coming down from Canada with some real speakers like Paradigm's.

Oh, I'm envious of you guys. I only get OTA HD where I am cuz huge trees completely block any Southern view.
My only consolation will be to pick up the upcoming DVD sets as they're released. Watching 16:9 480p & DD5.1 will still beat cable HBO in a huge way.

Did everyone pickup on all of the product placments last night?
Here are a few:

Well apparently the FBI has some dealings with Denon. On the FBI guy's desk, you could see the return address for Denon on one of the letters in the holder on the front of his desk. It looked like a warranty return letter or something. Either there's something about Denon we don't know, or the HBO prop department is going to have to be a little more careful about the stuff they use from now on :)

I'm in the process of upgrading to HDTV, so I'm mising out.
Still, I was absolutely astounded at how good the picture was in widescreen. Usually, the satellite picture looks marginal at best when blown up to 100" But not this. It was like watching a good laser disc.
What did they do? Cut back on the compression?
The picture looked so good complaining about the Nancy Marchand scene sounds like nit-picking.
Folks, you've got a great series, and the network is taking you seriously. You don't have to love every scene. Lighten up.

What I thought was really nice of HBO was placing the short blurb before the show began stating that it was being broadcast in widescreen where available (or something like that), but was also available for viewing in the SD format. Since there wasn't a whole lot of promotion for the fact that it was going to be in HD I was happy to see some mention of it. Thanks, Chris
