I'm new to this forum. I am currently reviewing HT Speakers & Recievers and welcome any advice/comments from the experts out there on the "Home Theater Forum". I am willing to spend between $3,000 - $3,500 for the combination of HT speakers and reciever. I currently have a Mitsu 60" Rear Projector and Panasonic DVD player.

This system will be used 100% for Home Theater.

My TV room/Game room is approx. 17x18 with 11 ft. raised cathedral ceiling.

I've been considering a Denon 3802 and the M&K 750 series. I've also considered an Onkyo THX Select Reciever as well to use with the M&K's.

I have also considered the following:

- Yamaha RX V1200 with Paradigm Speakers (Monitor 7's, CC370 Center, ADP 370B Surrounds and PDR12 Sub).

- Boston Acuostics Sys 10K

- Boston Acuostics PV 800, Theatro & (4) Haydens

I'm not partial to any particular set up. I just want the best "bang for my buck" and can spend up to $3,500 for the speakers/reciever combo. I'm open to all recommendations.

Also, any comments regarding purchasing this type of high-end equipment from on-line companies (or E-Bay companies) would also be appreciated. There are some very tempting prices on-line, but I'd be worried about factory re-builds or seconds. Any thoughts?????

Don,

Welcome to our neck of the woods!

$3,500 is a very nice budget to work with! What I'd look into:

Denon AVR-3802 receiver - $900

SVS 20-39PC - $750

nOrh SM 6.9 video package - $1,500

nOrh 4.1 center surround - $275

Thanks for the reply. I'm not familiar with the "SVS" or the "nOrh" brands. Could you fill me in a little. Where can I get there components on-line? I'm an avid reader of "Home Theater Magazine" and don't recognize these brands. But, I have seen a lot of positive traffic on the SVS subs on this forum lately. I'll check out their web sites, if available.

Don,

I think you are on the right track with the Denon or the Onkyo. I am partial to Onkyo, but for no particular reason.

As for the speakers, I like the M&Ks better than the Paradigms. They both sound great though. One good thing about the M&Ks is that less people have them. Too many people have Paradigm.

Other great speakers are Definitive Tech, nOrh, B&W, ...

Get whatever sounds the best to you for the money.

Thanks again for all of the response. Your insight is proving very helpful to me. I d ohave a couple of questions if you have a sec.

You mentioned that the average price of:

Denon AVR-3802 receiver - $900

SVS 20-39PC - $750

nOrh SM 6.9 video package - $1,500

nOrh 4.1 center surround - $275

This nOrh SM 6.9 video package for $1,500 is different than the price I found on nOrh's website. Is there a special price for 4 of them?

Also, the nOrh's are a very interesting style to say the least. But, I am very interested in them, since many folks (like yourself)seem to have high regard for them. My problem is I cannot visualize how I could place them in my TV room. Especially in the side/back locations for the surrounds. I can easily place towers and/or wall mounts, but I'm not sure about these babies. The "footprint" seems big by looking at the pictures.

Comments?

nOrh is one of the best, if not the best build quality in your price range for speakers. Now I can't speak for you, but I love em'.
Also a nice combo is the Paradigm one you mentioned, that's a real nice set-up :)

Don,
You have a good sized room with over 3000 cu ft. I don't know if bookshelf speakers will work for you or not (or if they are a consideration).
Here's an option you might consider. Mind you, I never ever thought I'd buy speakers without hearing them first. But you can find some good values from internet speaker companies.. with return options, too.
Receiver:
Onkyo 898 ~$1000-1100
http://www.jandr.com/
http://www.oade.com/
http://www.onecall.com/ (HTSpot members can get discounts.. maybe HTFr's too? I dunno) I believe HTF recently started group buys with onecall. http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...?s=&forumid=37
Speakers: (try to negotiate...)
Here are a few well reviewed internet speaker companies:
http://www.axiomaudio.com/
http://www.norh.com/ (a bit on the different side)
http://www.ascendacoustics.com/
http://av123.com/divaproducts.html
http://www.atlantictechnology.com/
http://www.hometheaterdirect.com/
And for a sub: (there is NO substitute!)
http://www.svsubwoofers.com/
I put together a nice package from Axiom and SVS for well under $1800. My risk was the return shipping if I didn't like any particular piece. I kept them all.
BTW, I got factory blems from Axiom (no audio defects.. just finish) and would ask you to point out the blems.. if you can find them. ;)
My Axioms are floor standing mains: M60Ti
VP100 center
M3Ti surrounds.
My sub is SVS 20-39cs with Samson 700.
Hope you enjoy the hunt, Don. :)

Don...
I can't speak for the nOrh speakers because I have never heard them, but I can recomend the Paradigm speakers you talked about. I have Paradigm speakers and I am very happy with them and I highly recommend them. If you went with the Paradigm set up you mentioned (Monitor 7's, CC370 Center, ADP 370B Surrounds and PDR12 Sub) I would look into using Mini Monitors as your surrounds insted of the ADP's and put the extra money into getting dual SVS CS+ subs. You have to consider placement if you were to go with the ADP's too. The crossover of the Monitor 7's should work great with the SVS's. My advice is don't rush into anything, take your time!! I have rushed into some ht purchases and have regreted it. Try to hear as many set up as you can so you can get a feel for what you like the best.
