Director Frank Capra’s Beloved Masterpiece Arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™
    For the First Time Ever

Screen Shot 2019-08-05 at 2.44.56 PM.

    IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE

Fully Restored from the Original Negative, Perennial Favorite Arrives in
    4K Ultra HD Combo October 29, 2019

Also Available in 2-Disc Blu-ray™ with Newly Remastered Black-and-White Film, Along with Colorized Version

Return to Bedford Falls to experience the life-affirming message of director Frank Capra’s enduringly popular classic all over again when IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time ever October 29, 2019. Fully restored from the original negative IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE in 4K delivers amazing clarity with sharper and brighter images for a sensational home viewing experience.

Paramount spent over a year painstakingly restoring this treasured film, using the original nitrate negative along with two fine grain masters made in the 1940s. Each element was carefully scanned using the very latest technology to both preserve the delicate negative and create the best possible digital image. Fortunately, 13 of the 14 reels of the original negative survived, but portions had begun to deteriorate so the best image was selected from one of the three original sources on a shot-by-shot basis. The result is a more vibrant and detail-rich picture that brings this classic to life like never before.

The 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack includes the black-and-white film in 4K high definition, as well as a colorized version on Blu-ray, along with three special features new to 4K Ultra HD disc: “Restoring a Beloved Classic,” “Secrets from the Vault,” and “It’s A Wonderful Wrap Party.” A 2-Disc Blu-ray set will also be available that includes the newly remastered film in black-and-white, along with a colorized version and the three special features listed above.

Well folks, this should make many people very happy. I never thought Paramount would released it, but "It's a Wonderful Life" and it's one of those titles that keeps getting physical media releases across various home video formats.

The 4K/Dolby Vision digital on iTunes looks fantastic so people should buy it.

Maybe, as Paramount clearly changed their mind about "It's a Wonderful Life" having a physical media release.

I'm happy about this as I never got around to buying the iTunes version.

Oh hell yes. A long, long time coming and a movie I will ::happily:: re-buy on physical media to get the restored transfer. I am 100 percent jumping on this.

Are they rescanning the camera negative at 4K? I mean HDR for a black and white film? I can maybe see it for the colorized version but seems unneeded to me. Please educate me on a 4K release(that’s not sarcasm)

    Your education is $$$$$$.

In all likelihood I'll just be buying the Blu-ray and calling it a day.

I appreciate that they’re putting out this new master on both UHD and regular BD. I’ll probably future proof myself by getting the UHD combo.

    Good news.

I hope it ends up in theaters this December with Fathom Events like some of these high profile classics do after a big restoration. Would love to see this one in a theater.

This one shall be mine and I feel a lot more optimistic now about the prospects of seeing The Ten Commandments or To Catch a Thief in 4k UHD.

Fathom doesn't have this listed anywhere, especially for December. This is what's going to shown as for right now.

According to how I understood the press release, the UHD/Blu combo will have the feature in b/w in 4K but only colorized in Blu. If one wants a b/w Blu, one will have to buy the 2 disc Blu set.

Please correct me if I am wrong about this.

I assume the blu on the 4K set includes both b/w and colorized. I think the press release is just awkwardly worded.

I hope you're correct. The way it's worded, it sounds like they're attempting to force double-dipping for those who want both a b/w 4K as well as a b/w Blu-Ray. Anyway, time will tell.

HDR on a black and white film, if done properly, can be outstanding. Schindler's List is a great example of how to use HDR with black and white cinematography.

I’ll be getting the Blu Ray.

This won’t have the bonus features from the previous release?

From the press release it sounds like they've dropped the making of documentary hosted by Tom Bosley (Howard Cunningham from Happy Days), a Frank Capra tribute narrated by his son, Frank Capra Jr., and the trailer.

I hope this release lives up to the promise of that press release. I've wanted this one for years, but never bit because each release has had one deal breaker or another.

The point of HDR is to have a greater range of shades between black and white, so that the blacks can be blacker and the whites can be whiter without banding.

If anything, that is even more impactful with black and white than with color.
