onkyo or pioneer (1 Viewer)

I am trying to choose between the following:
Onkyo 604
Pioneer VSX1016

or

should I jump up to the
Onkyo 674
Pioneer Elite VSX80

I am potentially buying Hometheater Direct speakers (level 3 towers)
or may be the SVS 5.1 system
I am still working out that decision as well.

I also just purchased
ascend 340SE mains and center with HTM Surrounds (currently on sale)
with an HSU STF-2 (20% off)

I am looking forward to putting this all together after much debate.

What is your budget? Crutchfield currently has the Onkyo 703 for $499.

I can probably do at most $600

dumb question:

my dvd player works best via it's HDMI connection. My TV accepts HDMI. I can I run video from the DVD player directly through the TV, and connect audio only through the reciever (so the receiver doesn't necessarily need HDMI?)

Yes, use optical or coaxial digital to the receiver.

hmm i've been hung up on needing HDMI on my receiver, but it sounds like since my tv has gobs of inputs having HDMI on the receiver isn't necessary - just would make switching between sources easier.
