I'd suggest switching to DeepDiscount or DVDPacific. I've had many dealings with both of these sending things to the UK. The customer service at DVDPacific is very good.
I can understand that Amazon might want to offer a service whereby the customer can pre-pay customs charges due, because in some countries (like mine!) these charges can make getting hold of your stuff something of a pain. At the very least it can cause delays, at worst it means hiking off to a "local" (haha) postal depot to pay up and collect.
However, it really should be optional, not something they foist on the customer.
This is especially since lots of postal services and customs centres have a tendancy to miss packages that they should charge fees on.
