Yesterday, the Cash3 winning number for New York was 9-1-1, isn't that strange?

So many people played those numbers that the system locked out many other people trying to play those numbers once too many people played those numbers. Weird.

Well here's the odds and payouts:

Note: Minimum bet - $0.50. Straight/Box payouts differ on whether straight or box is hit, payouts and percentages based on total possibilities.

Formula for Total Possibilities - 10x10x10 = 1,000

Straight -- Possibilities - 1 -- Odds - 1::1,000.00 -- Payout - $500.00 -- Percentage - 50.00%
3 Way Box -- Odds - 1::333.33 -- Payout - $160.00 -- Percentage - 48.00%
6 Way Box -- Odds - 1::166.67 -- Payout - $80.00 -- Percentage - 48.00%
3 Way Straight/Box -- Odds - 1::333.33 -- Payout - $490.00 -- Percentage - 49.00%
6 Way Straight/Box -- Odds - 1::166.67 -- Payout - $490.00 -- Percentage - 49.00%
Front Pair -- Possibilities - 10 -- Odds - 1::100.00 -- Payout - $50.00 -- Percentage - 50.00%
Back Pair -- Possibilities - 10 -- Odds - 1::100.00 -- Payout - $50.00 -- Percentage - 50.00%

Wow, I'm glad they have an engineer on hand to explain that the chance of picking one number out of 1000 is 1 in a 1000. :laugh:

too bad they didnt have anyone telling us how probable it is to pick that number on that particular day. sure 1 in 1000 for any day, but for a specific day of the year, i would imagine the odds to be 1 in 365,000. a little more significant now, isnt it?

Wouldn't it still be 1 in 1000? Just because its a wednesday or a friday doesn't mean the odds are any greater or less...right?
Or maybe I slept during that day of class which is entirely possible :)

Mike, Christ:

The probability would be 1:365,000, but that is still not really significant, since any combination of a specific day and a specific number would be 1:365,000 as well.

The days are not random elements. What you are talking about are the odds of picking A DATE, then a number corresponding to that date. In our case, the day was not picked...

1/365000 represents the chances of all days of the year having numbers corresponding to their dates, for a particular year.
