You know, even though I don't pick up too many of the Criterion new releases (too busy buying older ones), I always love seeing the new covers. They just get better and better.
3 Women is a good movie and worth seeing (helps if you know something about Jungian psychoanalytic theory, though) and in any normal set of Criterion releases, it could hold its head up.
However, against 'Floating Weeds' it pales into insignificance (and I must stress that I am an Altman fan). This movie is, even by Criterion's standards, a major release (Ozu's works have been shamefully neglected in the West) and along with Tokyo Story (by the same director) is an utterly essential purchase for anyone who has any claim to be serious about movies. As with nearly all Ozu's work, there's very little outward drama, no 'exciting' plot, and the camera never moves in a scene. But there is practically nothing in all of cinema to match the humanistic insight of Ozu's work.
This is great news. I've been looking forward to seeing Floating Weeds ever since reading Roger Ebert's Great Movies review of it. I also believe it has a place on his all-time Top Ten.
