Hey everyone. My old 46" Magnavox tv finally died, so a few weeks ago, went to Best Buy to get a new TV.
Well, I really wanted the 16:9 widescreen...but due to a custom made wall shelf, we cant get one because it wont fit. So we bought a Panasonic PT-51HX41 4:3 HDTV. I figured it would be ok because it says you can put it in 16:9 mode.
Well, I just found out for some reason, you cant put it in 16:9 mode...only if you have the digital set top box.
Now I really want to return this TV to best buy and get one that will go into 16:9 mode.
Can anyone suggest a good tv? Between 46-52 inches

The only HD-ready 4:3 RPTV's that do the 16:9 squeeze for both 480i/480p and 1080i are the Sony 53HS10/61HS10, their XBR 4:3 RPTV equivalents, and the Philips 60PP9601. Well, except there are some new contenders just coming out, like the new Sony's.
With the Toshiba 4:3 HD-ready RPTV's, you can get around their lack of a 480i/480p squeeze. What you do is get a Home Theater PC, and use it to upscale NTSC and DVD's to 540p or preferably 1080i. 540p/1080i input forces the set to do a squeeze. You might look into whether that is possible for your Panasonic set, though if you can still return it that might be wise.
Why not consider a small 16:9 set, like the Mitsubishi 46807?

Steve,
I have had the Toshiba 43H70 for about 5 months now and I enjoy it very much.
Good luck in your search.
Jake

I'm moving this to the TV section, you'll probably get better answers there.
