Is this common of DVD players? I was thinking of selling my PS2, but if I did I would have no way of playing music on my theater.

    How old is your player?

Many pre-2000 players have problems with CD-R/RW, before they started using a double laser system

VCDhelp.com states that your player will play CD-RW's, but not CDR's.
It also should recognize a VCD burned on a CD-RW.
