Fred- If your talking about the Powell & Pressburger film, I have asked about it several times, and here is what I have heard:
1) Columbia owns the rights, since they bought them to do a remake (live, on stage, I believe) with Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, which I think we can all thank the heavens never materialized.
2) Columbia paid for a costly retoration on the film.
3) Criterion will NOT be doing the DVD.
4) At some point, we can look for Columbia to release the DVD, but, so far, they have been silent on a date of release.
My information may be in error, but again, it is what I have heard from several "good people" here at the forum who have been lovers of the films of P & P much longer than I have been.
If you are R2/Pal compatible it is out in the UK. It's being repackaged with "Life and death of Col. Blimp" as a 2 pack on 3/17/03 for crazy cheap (around 10 pounds sterling, or about $15). There are other P&P films out in the UK that aren't out in R1: 49th Parallel, A Canterbury Tale. Down to Earth (and Battle of the River Plate is being reissued on 3/17 as well). All are budget priced and the quality is just fine. They're the best use I've put to my cheap $80 multi-region player.
What Mark said is consistent with the info I got when I did some digging.
Considering they shelled out on the restoration, I don't understand why Columbia isn't eager to recoup some money on it.
Some time ago, I started a reqeust thread in the Studio Feeback area. If you have not already done so, I would suggest adding your name to the list there. Here is a link to the thread in question.
