And while you're at it, have it get rid of pop-up ads as well, that other scourge of the internet..
Disabling javascript gets rid of those quite nicely, and there are tools out there (many are free) that will block popups as well. I think popups have been pretty much covered already.

I read something today about stopping spam.
http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stor...845621,00.html
The author's points were as follows:
* spam doesn't cost the sender anything - 1 email or 10,000 it is the same
* since it doesn't cost the sender anything, any response is a win
Therefore his solution is to start charging for sending email.

My own solution is rather harsh - the death penalty for anyone sending spam. We just need some Net-Detectives to ferret these people out.

The mail filter we're using drops all incomming mail with an invalid source address. It seems to do a pretty good job. I also block on key words in subject and some source domains. Cuts way down on the spam that makes it through to the office.

Just blocking ~10 key words probably dropped ~80% of all of the spam we were getting. And anyone who wants to recieve mail with "teen porn" or "penis enlargement" in the subject has to come and explain to me why i should give them an exemption from the rules. no takers so far.

I also have a Hotmail account and have received hundreds, if not thousands, of spam e-mails. Recently I've tweaked my security settings to a point where I think the spam will get filtered out for good.

First I set my junk mail filter level to High, so that I can get e-mails from the people I know (i.e. those in my address book) and e-mail from individuals who want to get ahold of me. I then set my junk mail deletion to Immediate Deletion, which means I never see any of those nasty e-mails.

So far, it seems to have worked pretty well. I may not receive one or two e-mails I might want to get, but that's a small price to pay for saving myself the trouble of dealing with all of those awful spam messages.

I was gonna start another thread to ask this, but I'll post this here:

I've been getting some junk email that opens up a browser window on my computer, but with NO controls on the top or bottom of the screen! One was a get-rich-quick thing and the other which I've gotten 3 times was a porn site (which I didn't mind terribly, it's just that I didn't really have time to be looking at it right then!) I haven't found ANY way to get out of these except to re-start the computer!

My question is, is there any other way to close these other than spending 5 minutes re-starting everything??? (I will confess I haven't been the most computer-literate since the Apple II went out of style!)

Do a search on cnet.com for "tweakui", it is a control panel utility that allows you to do all sorts of cool stuff with your computer, and it includes the ability to prevent pop-up windows from taking precedence on your machine. Give it a try. Any other suggestions?

You should be able to close your email client and have the windows disappear. If that doesn't work, do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and end the task that way (it will probably be a iexplore.exe that needs to be killed).

If the window doesn't have the "X" to close it, there should be a close button within the window somewhere. If not, someone screwed up big time...

If you're using Outlook Express, go into Tools->Options and click the Security tab. Then set the security zone to the Restricted Sites zone. This should prevent javascript in HTML email from executing, preventing the popups. Other email clients should have a similar feature.

Or not. Exactly how much junk mail do you get anyway that has come via the post office?

I just go and delete them as they come in, but frankly I just can't see the point because if you ever *do* click on one the link is invalid so they're just kids pissing people off, as far as I can see.

The way I look at it they are at home, bored, and they read a bit in some book or on the net explaining how you can make a program just generate random email addresses and link it to a SMTP system and they do because they can and they know how much it will piss people off!
