This jogged my memory of an online interview with Lukas Kendall where he talked about the efforts to remaster the Bond scores during that 2002 effort. I don't recall if McDonald or Schwartz are mentioned, though they probably were. I totally forgot about that interview!

Perhaps the missing Moonraker score Tapes are still here at the studio it was recorded at?

The lost tapes have not been looked for...
Anyway maybe a quick call will resolve it.

Glad to help! It's time to get these scores finished proper..

They should have put isolated scores in Dolby 5.1 on the DVD and bluray so we can least listen to the score isolated in discrete.

Still one of the best Bond of the 70's. "All those feathers and he still can't fly" :rolling-smiley:

Spy and golden gun tapes are at abbey road...see attached picture.

What's the hold up???

The current Bond producers have zero interest in anything that their predecessors did. As far as they're concerned, Bond films started in 2006 with Casino Royale.

That's too bad, if true.
What are the licensing issues / challenges that surround these scores?
Seems like there are many more obscure films that end up having expanded soundtracks released. Most annoying.

I would guess that Capitol still holds the CD and download rights and are either unwilling to, or want too much money, to sublicense to a soundtrack label. plus, securing rights to access the tapes for the new material may not be easy or inexpensive. I think it *would* happen if the producers got behind the project, but that seems unlikely.

It would be great to know more about what is the truth too. That is like you've stated it could / may be multiple reasons.
The tapes being lost is not true.
Rights issues for release is an unknown in terms of specifics.
The apathy by the producers again could be a good reason.
It would be nice to know more about overall and what the true complication should are.

If all the Star Trek film scores can be released with bonus tracks and remastering, surely these scores can be released. Unless the rights issues are stalling it.

In fact I shake my head at some of the scores that are able to be released and ask myself who would buy some of them.

It's interesting that the producers cared enough to shut down the funding for the moonraker re recording. Also that it hasn't spurred them in to release the full score which apparently MGM has had the tapes for since the 90s.

Puzzling.

Capitol's customer service is hard to locate. Messaged on twitter.

I think the ball is MGM's court more than it is UMG's at this stage. Hell, considering the neglect the UA-Liberty catalog has had since the collapse of EMI, they may not even own it any more.

And JFTR, Warner owns A View to a Kill now.

Hopefully UMG can be convinced to release these important scores that are wanted by the public.

Hey guys thought I'd jump back in here and bring up a newer soundtrack, Goldeneye. I was feeling nostalgic for the film as I thought it was a terrific reintroduction for the 1990's of Bond. And Pierce Brosnan was well served in the script for the most part, he made a great debut.

However, when I saw the film the first time, the music left me feeling wanting. It wasn't a very good score. I hated that the traditional arrangements were not there. Instead it was a very techno score. But the more I think about the film, they are inseparable now. The music after all this time just now fits the film for the most part. So I thought I'd revisit a soundtrack CD I don't listen to much. I had a quick listen to it yesterday. And I can now hear the James Bond theme in there, it's just subtle and buried by the more modern adaptation. So I'm starting to re-evaluate it. It's too bad the soundtrack CD did not include the reworked tank chase piece, we only get Eric Serra's version. I just might listen to it a couple of more times and watch the film the next chance I get. What do you guys think? I'm thinking you guys did not care for it too. :)

I bought a copy of it used in both 90s. I rarely listen to it.
There are a couple of decent tracks but not much.
The title song is easy top 5 for me though. I bought the single in 1995 and listened to it over and over.
I'll have to see what tracks I do like on the score...

On one of the best of bond CDs they included the goldeneye trailer music and that is a great piece of music imo.

Still no news on expanded soundtracks.
Maybe with bond 25 and the new agreement for film distribution something will change.
I'm in favor of an apple or Amazon buyout at this point. Time for changes and an expansion of the bond universe.

I thought the soundtrack release DID have the symphonic tank chase music on it...? I'm going by the Google Play Music version, though.

I only wish I had the music from the trailer(s). I loved the "still one man" mystery reveal that opened it. I need to find a VCR, because my memory is that my FRWL VHS tape only had the reveal, "You were expecting someone else?" and the title, no clips from the film. Very short teaser. I'm probably wrong. But it certainly set up some great anticipation of the new film.

I have mixed feelings about the film. It felt contemporary, but retained a lot of flavor of the Moore and Dalton era Bond films. Dalton could've starred in it; Moore, not so much. Brosnan brought some of the coldness and sadism that Moore disliked. He had very sudden, birdlike moments that might look tough, but are actually pretty silly. An attempt to make him Very Athletic. :-|

But to the subject ... in retrospect, Serra's score seemed a reasonable decision to bring Bond up to date, but some of it is oh SO dated. Playing the Bond theme guitar with tympani is interesting, and doesn't grate on my ears, but Serra's other coloration seems like something a young 'un would do on an Amiga or Sega or something. That end title song ... WTF. I know the Dalton Bonds ended with a separate song, and I consider it a anachronistic touch. The films classically end with an arrangement of the opening song, making the score consistent.

The car chase. It's all been said. :P But FYEO had similar "today's music tastes" in it. It's an individual perspective, but I feel like the more they make a Bond film hip and contemporary, the less "blood" the film has coursing in its veins. The series formula is anachronistic, and requires a light touch to pull off. Anything glommed on with a trowel tends to smother it. (That holds true for SPECTRE, too. I can't remember anything about the music in that film. Every scene having a heavy, atmospheric, curated seriousness to it made the film sag into the mud, for me.)

Hey guys, thought I'd add a post about Thunderball. I'd been listening to the Thunderball sound track the last few days in the car and iPhone. So it inspired me to watch the blu ray last night. I was surprised by how good the title track sounded in the movie.
Tidbit: the originally intended title track, "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," can be played with the film by switching to one of the commentary tracks (the second, IIRC). I kinda prefer it.

I think your right on the Russian VHS tape and the end. Looking for peace and quiet? Love that 007 promo too!

I believe the tank chase Ian on the album. I listened to the album a bit tonight. Just the first few tracks. I'll listen tomorrow and post when I can!

Nelson, I listened to the score and it's about the same for me. There are a couple of tracks that are ok but overall it's forgettable. I actually reached the halfway mark on the disc and I wanted it to be over!

Any way some of the quieter music is ok. Not much to like for me on this one.

So thankful we had david Arnold for so many! Tomorrow Never Dies is so much more enjoyable to listen to!

Really wish John Barry had scored Goldeneye.

Oh and I miss Pierce Brosnan as Bond. Even with the bad scripts he was great as Bond imo

I'll listen to For Your Eyes Only soundtrack any day over Goldeneye. I do agree both are dated as is Spy Who Loved Me score too. I like Spy and listen to it a lot as well.

Highlights:
Theme song
We share the same passions
Severnaya suite
Run shoot jump...

Maybe one other, but overall not one that I care for. It's been years since I listened to this one.

Note the tank chase music heard in the film is not included.
