Just want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Watch your kids and watch you wallets/purses in big crowds. Also remember if the deal is TOOOO Good it probably is no good.
THIS MAY BE A LEGIT DEAL - WHO KNOWS - I will not be trying it out myself.
There is a Denon 5803 on ebay with a particularly low price. I emailed the seller some questions why he has never sold on ebay before and now is selling a $3500 receiver. Here is the nice reply I got back. The auction is number deleted . Auction says it is from EU Canada whatever that means. Then I get this note.
Dear Sir,
I have bought the product from my uncle from Spain. He
has a company who is in bancrupcy now and he sell all the
products very very cheap because he need money.Thats why i
sell it also cheap because i want to sell it fast.
Regarding the shipping and payment here are the details :
1. SHIPPING:
There are 3 options of delivery services that are very
fast :
- UPS 2 days air insured
- FedEx 2 days air insured
- DHL insured
Any of those services are good, but I personaly
prefere UPS 2 days air, if you have other preference,
there is no problem.
2. PAYMENT:
For payment, the fastest way to send money worldwide
is Western Union wire transfer. To arrange the
transfer, you must go in person to an Western
Union agent (please visit
www.westernunion.com or to find the nearest agent and
hours of operation).
From Western Union , you will receive a number (MTCN -
Money Transfer Control Number), you must send me that
number as soon as you have arranged the payment so I
can go to www.westernunion.com to see if the
transaction is arranged.
As soon as I have verifyed the transaction, I will
ship you the package with all the accesories with the
delivery service selected by you.
For the reason that you will pay some money for the
Western Union wire transfer fee, I will cover shipping
and insurance.
3. INSURANCE
The package will be insured at the delivery service
for the amount of
3000$.
If somethig happens on the road , you will receive the
insurance from the delivery service.
4. RETURN POLICY
As soon as the package arrives, you will test the
product and if it does not matches 100% to your
expectations, you will return it in max. 5 days since
the arrival date. In this case I will send you the
full amount back and you will send me the product in
the original box and you will pay the return shipping
and insurance.
I'm waiting for your reply in order to close this deal
as soon as possible.
Here is my name and address:
FIRST NAME:HERDAN
LAST NAME:DINAM
Adress:CALLE GALLILEO NO.26
CITY :LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA
ZIP CODE:35007

Thanks, Herdan
Herdan, if you read this good luck on your auction and I hope it is legit and works out well for you.
Everyone be safe this season.
Admin note - thanks for the warning, but please don't aid in the fraud by posting these auction item numbers here. The warning in itself is all that's needed. Plus, we don't allow active auction links on the HTF. Thanks.

FYI, I just searched for this auction number on ebay and couldn't find it.

Can someone remind me how this scam works? Is it that the "seller" doesn't need an ID when they pick up the Western Union money order? And then they either send nothing, or a box of rocks?

I've had this scam done to myself as well with a projector. It used to happen all the time on Yahoo auctions. I went as far as sending the moneygram but as soon as I found out I rushed back down and had it cancelled.

Popular big ticket items seem to be the products of choice. They always have a story about needing money quick as well. Hopefully fewer and fewer people will get tricked by these people, especially during the holidays.

I had a good experience with a guy in Indonesia. I had to Western Union the guy if I wanted the stuff within 2 months and it went smoothly. I couldn't pay by any other means. I had my stuff 3 days later.

The key I think is to check the seller rating CAREFULLY for any expensive item, and just forget it if there are any warning signs.
