I have the new Sony 46” 16:9 RPTV and aside from my DVD player, use a DirecTV Ultimate TV receiver for most of my watching.
A couple of shows have had some aspect issues as of late, and I finally figured out why.
99% of the stuff I watch on DirecTV is fine. I watch it with the TV in full mode as I don’t want the gray vertical bars and I am used to the slightly stretched look now.
ER and (last night) Kingpin were getting stretched and looked wrong. The NBC bug was half cut-off and you could tell the picture was just not right. Both these programs are broadcast wide screen and I found out that it was the 16:9 setting in my Ultimate receiver that was causing the problem.
This is the only time I’ve noticed this. HBO, PPV and other things broadcast in wide screen seem to be fine. Switching the Ultimate receiver back to 4:3 and keeping the TV on the Wide setting resulted in the proper picture.
Just in case anyone else was having this problem….
Cheers,
Chris
