If my digital cable provider doesn't offer HD local channels, can I pick them up by antenna? (1 Viewer)

I will look at those site you listed right now and see.

Look at Bruce's first link to AntennaWeb.org. You'll be asked some info on where you live (zip code), and it'll be able to tell you what type of antenna you'll need to pull in closest HDTV channels being broadcasted near you.

So do the now live ones mean they come in HD?

So the yellow one would probably be the best one to get.

Stupid Question time. Anyone know if the local Channels in NY are broadcast in HD on cablevision systems? Wodnering if it's worth the extra $10's and if it'll clear up any of the 'diagonal lines' and fuzzy pictures that basic cable seems to give me. These issues persist on some TV sets, and not others last time I checked..

Take a look at the pic below in my sig for an example in the upper right hand corner.

Kyle,

The "-DT" at the end of the call letters denotes "Digital" - i.e. - HDTV. So with a Yellow-coded antenna you can pick up ABC, NBC, CBS, PAX and UPN in HiDef. Then, the only major network left, FOX, is down the list in blue, KMPH-DT. So you will need a much better antenna if you also want to get Fox in HiDef.

Also, take note that your ABC affiliate, KERO-DT, is broadcasting HiDef on channel 10 - VHF. That means you will need an antenna that works for both VHF and UHF to get all the HDTV channels.

Hope this helps.

Neil,

I recently got IO from Cablevision. I asked about HDTV when I ordered (late December/early January) and they didn't know what I was talking about. I see MSG, Fox Sports, HBO, and Showtime all have HD channels when scanning the channels. I found a listing about HDTV on their website and called a different number and now I am supposed to get a different cable box that will allow me to watch HD on my television set. (I will believe it when I see it).

I also asked about the networks and they said they are planning on expanding the HD service, but didn't say when.
Hopefully soon...

John

I'm interested in this as well.... I have DISH Network and a Panasonic 53WX42 HDTV...

I'm not really ready to shell out $600-700 for a new DISH Network HD receiver and new dish, but if I can get the OTA stuff for $300-400, I might be interested...

Here is the "yellow" list for my area:

* yellow KTUL-DT 10 ABC Tulsa OK May 1 2003 113°
* yellow KOKI-DT 22 FOX Tulsa OK Now Live 106°
* yellow KOED-DT 38 PBS Tulsa OK May 1 2003 107°
* yellow KTFO-DT 42 UPN Tulsa OK Now Live 106°
* yellow KOTV-DT 55 CBS Tulsa OK Now Live 107°
* yellow KJRH-DT 56 NBC Tulsa OK Now Live 107°

So if I understood everything above correctly, it looks like I can get OTA HD signals from my Fox, CBS, NBC and UPN affiliates (KOKI, KOTV, KJRH, KTFO) and ABC and PBS (KTUL) will come on line May 1.

Is this correct?

So I will need an HD antenna and a stand-alone HD receiver and that's it?

Does the fact that my local affiliates are broadcasting in digital guarantee that they are broadcasting the individual networks' HD programming, or should I call the local stations to make sure?

Thanks for the help!

No guarantees. Maybe you can call up the affiliates to find out. Also, FOX doesn't actually do HD as mentioned earlier. They seem to just do 480i linedoubled to 480p for broadcast althought the content can sometimes be 16x9. Not sure about UPN, but they're probably similar. PBS runs an HD demo loop most of the day.

UPN has no programming in HD, it's all upconvert. Supposedly they may broadcast an ep of Enterprise in HD as a test in May according to my local affiliate
