A friend of mine recently had digital cable installed and I noticed that they had the coaxial going into the digital settop box and then the coaxial going out from the STB as well and were totally ignoring the S video. So I tried the S video connection and it definitely wasn't any sharper than using the coaxial.
Should the S video be any better? It certaintly didnt appear to be.

Might help to post your cable provider, equipment, etc. I have digital cable with TimeWarner in Austin, TX. The decoder box is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 1000. I only use the s-video out, but the picture quality leaves much to be desired. It looks like TW takes analog channels with crappy source quality and digitizes many of them. As a result the picture is just as bad or worse than normal cable for many channels! The sound is often screwed up as well, so I'm really looking into switching to satellite.
